Soak City & Gemini Parking lot FYI

Jason Hammond's avatar

Most people probably already know this. But, after having been at the park Friday & Saturday I just thought I'd give everyone a heads up.

Due to the Saturday concerts the park is having, the Soak City & Gemini parking lots are closed. They are leaving everything set up until after the concerts are done for the year before they take anything down and reopen the lots.

I actually feel bad for the people who are specifically there to see the concert. Other than calling for the shuttle, (which many general public don't realize you can even do) all anyone an do is walk all the way through the park. If they brought a chair to sit on, they had to carry it back.

I'm amused that the promoter clearly over-estimated the number of people who would show up.

Does anyone know if the little side lot right next to Gemini is open?

^ It was a really dead concert. ON gemini it looked like maybe 400 people showed up. I think it is really wierd that Cedar Point doesnt have a concert stadium. I wonder why they just don't use the good time theature or the All wheels extreme stadiums for concerts?

There having a christian concert next Saturday in the same spot, I'm staying at Sancastles Suites, how close is the Soak City Parking lot, I'm hoping not to have to hear the music from my balcony, I want to enjoy the peace of my lake view

raptor3391, is this your first trip? Have you seen a map?

The park is open till midnight on Saturday, and according to the website, the last performance starts at 8:15. It does say that performances may last past operating hours. But I would guess that you will be somewhere in the park, not relaxing on your balcony. Right? Because that would be a big fat waste of time!

But to answer your question, it's not that far. There's a portion of Camper Village that lies between said parking lot and Sandcastle. Even if your room faces the lake I imagine that you will be able to hear some, if not all of it.

JoyFest brought a large crowd to Kings Island, so maybe that audience will be bigger than whatever they had this weekend. I'm not familiar with any of the acts scheduled, but Contemporary Christian music can lean toward the loud, rock side of music. But I dunno, the website indicates that African American Christian artists will be performing. And once again I'm not sure, but I'd look for more easy listening or gospel style acts that would appeal to a wider audience than rock would.

Here's the JoyFest website, that I accessed from CP's site.

I hope they don't bother you too much.

During our morning Maverick ERT, we could hear them practicing. It was loud. I wasn't at the park late, so I'm not sure how it sounded in the park with the crowds there and all the rides going.

I was walking back on the Gemini midway during the concert. It was pretty loud. At least loud enough to drown out the creepy soundtrack coming from the midway speakers. And yeah, going up Magnum's hill it looked like a pretty small crowd at the concert. Certainly not enough to justify closing that entire parking lot in my opinion.

Was there some singer named Toby performing? I only ask because, around 12:30, I was going up the lift on Gemini when suddenly six or eight teen and preteen girls in the other train began shrieking that name. They waved frantically at and called out to some fellow in the Gemini parking lot, who nonchalantly waved back. I know less than nothing about Christian rock, so I have no idea if it was some personage of significance.

No I've been to the point about 20 times in the last 10 years, but I wasn't exactly sure where the parking lot to Soak City was, I've never noticed it, well I don't consider it a waist to sit on the balcony and enjoy the beautiful lake view that I'm paying 250 dollars for, I plan on spending plenty of time at both, and my parents will be coming with us will probably be spending most of their time enjoying the lake, fortunately I haven't made my reservation yet, so I could watch the weather first, I think I'll postpone it a week, they advertise Sandcastle Suites as the quiet side of Cedar Point, but I guess lately that's not the case

That guy they were yelling about was TobyMac, a christian artist. His stuff is decent... and yes, he was there

That'll work if your plan is to draw only a couple hundred people. If they are planning for a couple thousand neither one of those venues would work.

Not to mention, neither one of them is set up to be a concert venue.

Stadium holds 1,600. Goodtime holds 950.

That many? Seems a lot smaller than that, although I haven't been in either in at least 10 years.

It seems that the Oceana Stadium would be big enough, but is the tank...er...stage big enough to accommodate the performers? And the lake backdrop is just spectacular. The only other problem I can think of is that I can't remember the sun angle on the stadium at sunset...

Oh, and did they specifically want a venue located outside the park gates?

Well, if your sitting in the center seats your facing North East. So the sun should be at your back more or less.

I'm actually extremely surprised at the sound of the turnout being rather small, and I'm sure the concert promoter was as well. Toby as the headliner can pack venues, and Family Force 5 is just as potent a name with youth groups now. I do wonder how well it was promoted, though. The only promotions I ever saw/heard were the texts I received from the concert promoter, and that's only because I got wind of concerts happening on here and went to check it out. I saw and heard nothing at any of the local churches (they and the local Campus Life/Youth For Christ regularly do trips to CP).

As for the venue, I was expecting the Hot Summer Lights screen area when I first heard about it. Once I heard it was a separate gate I wasn't sure where it would go.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

Hopefully this will be the first and last year for this kind of thing. I may be wrong, but it sure seems like a "it worked for park X, it will work here" mentality.
