So, lemme ask you something...

...when was the last time CP removed a large, permanent roller coaster?

Not Wildcat or some other semi-permanent touring trailer-able county-fair coaster that CP has simply "left up" from season to season...

No, a proper permanent coaster constructed on its own pilings and designed without portability or disassembly in mind.

Not a water flume, carousel, dark ride or slide. A coaster.

When?

Not Geauga or some other CF property... Cedar Point...

When?

Why?

Hmmm...

There are two in recent memory:

Disaster Transport - demolished 2012

Mean Streak - not a total demolition but they did rework a decent amount of the structure

Yup DT.

5 points to audi0c0aster.

And the why?

DT because it was a piece of garbage and way past it’s prime. Was the ride fun and a nice way to get out of the sun? Yes, no doubt. But if you can’t operate an indoor coaster because it’s raining and the troughs accumulate puddles, it’s time to rethink it. Not to mention the mechanical aspect of the ride. Way too many bandaids were put on that ride. That would be my opinion as to why.

And on a lesser note, the theming was garbage. Oh, it wasn't when it was 'new', it was actually kind of awesome in a 'budget Space Mountain' sort of way, but it fell apart so quick that it was eventually bypassed altogether, with what was left covered in neon blacklight paint in a sad attempt at a refresh. By the end, 'Welcome to Alaska' made zero sense because the story- an interplanetary cargo courier dips into tourism with disastrous results- was completely lost with the theming.

I think there's a lot of factors as to the "why," but I wouldn't say it was a piece of garbage. It was still a pretty fun ride, even with the theming taking a turn for the worse in its later years. But I thought the corrugated metal structure was a pretty big eyesore, and it was right on the beach. Tearing down DT was one of the first steps to revitalizing the beach by opening up the area, and better utilizing the great location that CP is known for.

I’d say it was garbage in the CP lineup.
At another park it could’ve been a great attraction, plus its location being eyesore is an understatement.

DT was a nice ride to get out of the heat and into AC, and it was a nice layout for little kids or if you had just eaten before you got on, but that’s about it. When it first opened in 1985, I’ve heard stories about sand blowing into the troughs. Well after they enclosed it; 1) the building was a major eyesore, and 2) everytime it rained, they couldn’t operate because the troughs would fill up with rain water. Gatekeeper is much better than DT. The track, plaza, and queue area look presentable, and you can see the beach.

Before the removal of Disaster Transport and Wildcat (both in 2012), the last coaster to be removed from Cedar Point was Jumbo Jet in 1978.

Boy, I would love to have Disaster and Wildcat back. I'd love it even more to get a time machine and try older coasters at all these parks (Jumbo Jet, Cyclone, King Cobra, original KI Bat).

I loved Jumbo Jet! The original Bat was a blast.

Let's not forget the Cedar Point Cyclone :-)

Lash and XS, thanks for the welcome back. I've had a very busy schedule of watching Food Network and ending up in the hospital a lot. 😀

Jumbo Jet and Wildcat, (as well as Scamper and Broadway Trip) being "portable" county-fair types of coasters (therefore not "permanent") do not count.

You could ride Jumbo Jet's twin at the Ohio State Fair every year in the 1970s back when the Super Loops was a new invention... (they probably have something at OSF nowadays)

DT is it in the last major coaster in 40 plus years.

And really... it was a waterless log flume...

But, more to the point, I think that it is unlikely that CP will take historically important coasters and remove them.

They don't have much of a history of it at Cedar Point...
