Smoking Policy?

Has anything changed from last year in terms of enforcement and compliance?

On my last visit I saw people using the designated areas, BUT I still did see people smoking on the midways. I will give CP the benefit of the doubt though since no employee was around to enforce it.

Though I love CP, I did not know the smoking policy. My sis and I were there all day long, and she had a few cigs here and there. Before we knew it was against the rules and she was smoking through out the park, we walked past many employees. Not until the end of the day, an employee told us that she could only smoke in the designated smoking areas. Our next trip to CP she just smoked in the car.

Which illustrates part of the problem. As best I can tell, the entire awareness around the policy revolves around the existence of the designated areas, and even then, that just implies there's a policy.

I think there needs to be significant signage at the gates. That's a first step.

I have really bad lungs which is really bad because im a runner too lol but last year i was in line for ttd and someone was smoking and i politely asked them to put it out and they blew smoke right in my face. The guy was smaller than i was so i ripped the cig right out of his hand and stepped on it. After that he left me alone and didnt light up for the rest of the line.

Oh do I love the smoking threads. But I'll say that I only indulge in this unnecessary argument once a year.

But the secret to the success of smoking areas must be mentioned. Make a whole bunch of areas in very conspicuous areas so that the smokers cannot miss them. After a season or two start to roll them back. But it's like Jeff said, people have to know that they're there before you expect them to follow the policy.

Wow adidas, you really have some guts! I'm a smoker, but I don't smoke anywhere but the designated sections. I actually get peeved when someone smokes somewhere other than those areas, I don't say anything to them because I'm not the kind of person who likes to start or cause arguements. But I think some of the CP employees and police need to step up because I've seen smokers around these people and they haven't done anything about it.

Where are the designated areas at? I agree with you Jeff. They should have a sign at the fronte of the park, as well as many through out.

Last weekend there was a man smoking while waiting at Troika. A CP policeman came up to him and told him he had to go to the smoking area behind Giant Wheel or put out the cigarette. He went. That was the only time I've ever seen the rule enforced.

I think smoking around the park is as bad as ever.

Also, last week, while we were waiting on a bench next to the Mean Streak entrance, a couple came up both smoking. They were standing right next to us and finishing their cigs before going in. The employee at the entrance didn't say a word. I gave them a dirty look and they got the message and tossed the cigarettes on the ground.

I agree that there should be better signs advising of the policy. The should be at every entrance and various places in the park. They need signs pointing to the smoking areas. The policy should be prominently placed on the maps too.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by a lack of enforcement. CP has had a smoking policy as long as I have been going there (early 90's) that has been spottily enforced.

How long has the policy of not smoking in line been in place?

How many signs are there, at the entrance of and throughout the queues, stating that there is no smoking?

How many people still smoke in line?

How many employees tell them not to smoke in line?

That's the entire problem at CP - it's difficult to find 

the smoking areas.  There's very little signage, and 

most of the areas as so far 'off the beaten path' that 

people just do not see them in passing.  One park that's 

done a great job integrating smoking areas is Kennywood: 

you can't miss the smoking areas located along the park's 

walkways; however, the locations pull the smokers off of 

the main walkways.  As a smoker I'm sensitive to this 

subject, and as the guest of a large amusement park 

where I spend a lot of money, I would appreciate not 

being alienated.  In this modern era there are few 

smokers who belive their habit will be accepted by 

everyone, and most smokers have no objection to being 

limited to designated areas...but make those areas 

simple to find!  If the rules are easy to follow 

people are less likley to break them!

Yea i know there is one but do they enforce it? Hell NO!

I was in line for Millie about half way through some guy lights up in front of me. Then the girl he was with also light up. I really dont mind both my parents smoked so its nothing new to me. But what hit me is the CP police were potroling the line and they walked pass them at least three times. Then i was in the station for Maverick And someone lit one up just before they got on the ride. and nothing was said. So if there is going to ba a policy they need to start enforcing it.

^ and there's the problem. I can see a regular employee not saying anything. They have enough to put up with with the guests already (overweight, lockers, rides down, etc.) but the cops are there to enforce such policies. And if they aren't going to, then A) what's the point of having on-site cops and B) what's the point of having the policy?

I personally don't care one way or the other, but I don't see much in the way of success to this policy as things stand currently. As long as people are not smoking in the lines then there is plenty of opportunity, unless it is super crowded, to get away from it.

As a smoker, I understand the need to feed the addiction. As a courteous person, I feed my addiction in the areas where it is acceptable to do such. Granted, the smoking areas are a little out of the way but from what I see from the rest of Ohio (I'm from MI), it COULD be a non-smoking park.

I also agree that the employees should enforce the smoking policy.

I totally agree with you there Robbi, they could have insisted on no smoking at all inside the park the way the laws are in Ohio (I'm from MI myself too). So I'm just thankful that there are places you can actually go to smoke, but I also agree that they should be a little more clearly marked.

Also, I never understood why the smoking area is near Camp Snoopy by the Paddleboat Excursion ride. You would think that it would be a little more out of the way from the children.

When people are line and they smoke it pisses me off. I deal with it until I get to the station. I tell the op and they deal with it.

Now that is one thing my sis didn't do. Even if it is not against the rules, it is just courteous to not smoke in line. The queue is already stinky because of everyone standing close together sweating under the hot sun. You don't need to add ciggarette smoke to that. Yuck!
