It might be a saftey issue. CP is always big on safety as we all know.

3 Years @ CP
Could be just upkeep, that they never got around to it. Calypso used to have canopies too. One year, they just may not have had the time to put them up, or one was broken and they didn't have the time to fix it before the park opened, and by the next year they're way in the back of some forgotten warehouse and just never get put back on. In '97 I was working before the park opened and we cleaned the Midway carousel one day, but ran out of brass polish for the poles: the supervisors said we'd get more and finish up in the next couple of days but we never did, and the poles stayed dirty all season. Might be the same sort of thing.

thats a shame if thats true.i also remember the scenery on the calypso, before they moved it to its location today.i wonder what happend to that as well.
if this boardwalk thing happens, will schwabichen be moved to a new location? where maybe?
I am guessing either the old scenary for Calypso is either rotting in a warehouse, or has simply been discarded.
Same with Schwab and the Earthquake and Pirate Rides, I would imagine. It's too bad, really, because it is those little details (the canopies and other scenery) that really add a special touch. But when there is so much to do, I suppose something has to go.

It could be a safety issue. Sometime in the late 70's or early 80's, there was an accident on the Calypso. In fact, the headline of the picture was Collapso. There used to be a fairly large illuminated decoration in the center of the ride that had an umbrella-frame like structure on top which was loaded with lights. During a ride cycle, the op noticed this center decoration shaking and she e-stopped the ride. Once the ride was unloaded, the decoration fell over. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the center decoration disappeared. I would like to see those decorations (center of calypso, schwabinchen decorations, sign to Super Himalaya) rehabbed and reinstalled, but I dont see it happening.

The stairs look like saftey hazard.

That's an interesting story, Idora Wildcat, I never thought of those decorations quite like that. I'm sure, because of the sudden changes in direction, that the poles support the umbrella-type scenery would be under quite a bit of stress, and it wouldn't take too much for an accident to happen. And I'm sure with CP's penchant for safety, as soon as one incident would occur - regardless if there was injury or not - the rest of the decorations, as well as similar ones on different rides, would disappear.

Interesting story, Idora Wildcat. I had thought that the removal of the "palm tree" from the Calypso might have been for fear of collapse onto the riders; I was not aware that it had actually happened.

Of course, the more recent removal of the large scenery panels from the back of the Calypso I suspect has more to do with preserving the view of the marina from inside the park. Not to mention reducing the number of light bulbs that have to be maintained.

As a teenager going through a growth spurt, I remember climbing into the Calypso cars when they had the canopy. I think I still may have the line in my forehead where I slammed into the edge of the metal canopy. Definately a safety issue! Also, disembarking while disoriented...if you forgot to duck, another subtle reminder to your coconut.
By the way, did anyone notice that the Schwabinchen had its scenery repainted fresh for the 2000 season last year? Also Matterhorn scenery was freshly painted last year.

Photographic philosophy:If it moves at CP-take 1 picture. Not moving-take 3-4 pics minimum!
I think calypso is the dumbest puke ride in the park, but i could stay on swabichen forever.
i like a lot of "eye candy" on flat rides,it does(in my oppinion)make the ride a little funner.plus it makes the ride look more appealing.
