Scared of Putting Your Hands UP

What ride are you afraid of putting your hands up. Mine would have to be at the bottom of Geminis hill and the hilex at the end

Wow! A thread from Coasterbuzz that made it to GTTP!

As I said on CB, TTD! On the launch, since they tell you to keep your hands down, but also, on the spiral. I ducked the first time, almost literally.

I can't keep my hands DOWN on TTD. I don't put my hands up on Big Dipper or Mean Streak because they're too rough, and Dipper (SFWoA) has that really loose safety bar. I'm kind of thin, so I almost fly out.

There is nothing at Cedar Point (or anywhere I've been on coasters / thrill rides) that makes me scared to put my hands up. I may not have them raised as high as I possibly can due to the illusion of choppers, but they're always up -- certainly on first rides. After that, I've proven to myself that I can (adrenaline factor) and from there it's a comfort thing, and depends on my enthusiasm at that time.

The only time I put my hands up is when I'm showing off... I sometimes ride rides with my hands down just because I'm too lazy to put them up.

It's ok to ride with your hands down, in fact, it is recommended... Even though they try to make every ride so you don't lose your hands if you put them up, they are not responsible for your injury if you get hurt with your hands up...

Sadly to say (to my knowledge), the park would be responsible for your injury if you could prove that the park did not do everything in their power to prevent injury to it's participants. I believe this is partially responsible to the fact that we are seeing auto-spielers installed in all rides. All from a legality standpoint.

I thought that the reason they put the "please keep hands and arms inside the ride at all times" signs up to keep them from getting lawsuits on someone claiming that the ride injured them because their hands were up... I may be wrong, but I think that they put those there to prevent lawsuits... I'm sure CP would have their first-aid people take care of the guest accordingly when they get injured... I had the privilage of seeing their first-aid people in action, and, from a sports medicine stand-point, they do know their stuff... They are trained professionals.

I always remembered spiels and written spiels mentioning somthing about keeping hands and arms down... I always thought it was liability so in case someone did get hurt the park wasn't held responsible because they had a disclaimer. Can anyone back this up or dispute it?

I agree it's fun to hold my hands up and all that jazz, but after working at CP for a season and just some of the things you learn about, safety takes over in my book. Id rather have my fingers than a rush of excitement, hehe. Safety first has been drilled so deep in to my head...

I would have to say going through Magnum's tunnels. I am always chicken when putting my hands up then. It feels like the tunnels are really low and when i put my hands up they'll cut off! hehe. Though i'll have my hands up throughout the ride. Also ttd...just because it goes sooo fast and i don't even have time to react to putting my hands up! But other than that....my hands are always in the air on all the coasters! :).

Last time I rode TTD, I put my hands up and they got stuck in the curves of the headrest. My arms were sore the rest of the day. I mean, the second the ride launched, my hands just shot up.

Here's a thought...

It says on signs around the park that it is a misdemeanour (sp?) not to follow safety instructions. So in theory, if people get hurt not following them (ie putting arms up when told not to) then they have commited a misdemeanour, and therefore only have themselves to blame.

However, I dont really know what a misdemeanour is (being Scottish - hence the doubt as to the spelling), and the only ride I wont ride with hands up is TTD, as I've heard people say it hurt their arms.

It's a misdemeanor? That means you can go to jail for it! well, at least get a slap on the wrist, maybe community service...

I never knew not following the rules of the park was a misdemeanor... I thought that the worst thing you would get from not following the rules was kicked out of the park...

hmmm... anyone else know about this misdemeanor thing?

Yes not following any of the signs, audio, or crew instructions on a ride is a misdemeanor in the state of Ohio. I am not for sure of the amount but there is a fine and possible jail. But thats if the arrest you or catch you. But there is the keyword if cppd were to arrest everyone that put there hands up there wouldn't be to many people at Cedar Point. I think the only way that they will arrest you is if they really feel that your endangering you and other people.

I wonder if I am gonna be on the Discovery Channel soon.

The following paragraph is posted on Cedar Point's site, in the park maps and in on signs in front of the rides and in some case, in the station.

Section 1711.551 of the Revised Code requires that riders must obey all warnings and directions regarding rides and behave in a manner that will not cause or contribute to injury to themselves or others. Failure to comply is a misdemeanor.

If you do get injured on one of Cedar Points rides because of your failure to follow +it's rules, then Cedar Point has a case against you in a lawsuit. They have signs posted in front of every ride, speils at most of the rides, and signs in the station of some rides. By putting your hands up, you are violating the ride's rules and thus Ohio state law. It's not a strictly enforced rule but it is stated that keeping your arm down is for your safety.

Members that have stated in their signatures that they are going to be future employees at Cedar Point and talking about how they violate the rules, irritates me. If I were in management, I wouldn’t hire someone that did that especially as a TL.

Eddy the retard is awesome.

Can't say I'd be comfortable with my hands up coming into Wildcat's brakes....other than that there is neither extreme enough ejector air or close enough head/hand choppers to keep me from putting my hands up at CP.

"Distance runners are experts at pain, discomfort, and fear."

SteelMonsters.....If you were management...from what you posted....you'd probably fire everbody and not hire anyone at all....for one how would you be able to tell that your employees would put their hands up on rides? Unless you follow them or what?....On our ride nights (if you don't know cp opens one coaster each week during the summer so us employees can ride them at night after the park closes) most of the employees are there and a few management does go to these as well because they have to check to see ID's and such so we can enter the fun, Anyways, this past season, especially on Millennium Force ride night, I believe we all had our hands way up in the air from what I saw. Sorry that irritates you. Odd indeed that it does...but oh well. I'm just curious what you would say to your employee who you are interviewing if you were managemant about hands up on coasters, to be honest...I don't think anyone would follow your rule and how would you be able to tell if they have or haven't?

Well in the mornings it is completely mandatory that you keep yourself in the 'correct rider position' or something to that effect. For Twister if you follow the audio announcements you will know exactly what I mean. (i.e.- Both arms holding the grab bars, legs not flailing, putting head back against the head rest, etc.)

If you *don't* follow these, albeit the first time would most likely be a stern warning, you can get written up. You aren't suppose to scream like you're just having the best of times, most likely in the case of the ride needing repairs and it stopping itself when load is put on... if you were screaming every time, the guests waiting would get perterbed, they'd complain to everybody that your crew is having the times of their lives and they would love it if they'd open the ride so THEY could get a chance, etc.

Every rule, safety guideline, etc. are ALL for a reason. Just because something has never happened at Cedar Point doesn't mean that it hasn't happened at another non-CF owned park. This includes, but not limited to, the use of extenders for larger guests, not being able to push on restraits, and not being able to help people - adults and children alike - into the seats. Everything is there for a purpose, and should be followed no matter what.

And while I don't have a problem with some people putting their hands up, if they do injure themselves it really is their own fault and they can face the consequences. I'm not one to do it, though, because I'm a huge chicken sh*t and can't stand the feeling... that and it's too much work for some rides to keep them up with the way the forces act upon your body...

And while Steal... is not in 'management' she/he IS a TL and that means that they do have the ability to get others written up for things not nescesarily like this, but if they've told the person not to do it and they've had fair warning then that person deserves what they get. Setting an example is everything, and maybe some others need to look at it in a similar way.

In reguards to this topic.. there's an interesting news post over at Coasterbuzz.

VertiGo Rides - 82

But if you follow the directions on the little tags on the back of the seats on the CP&LE RR you'll have to remain seated with your back and shoulders against the seat back. You'll have to lay down in your seat to do that.

My point you ask? My point is that much of the new warning and caution signage on Point is absolutely and totally useless. There are signs for Space Spiral and Sky Ride that tell you that your lapbar, shoulder harness, and/or seatbelt must be in the proper riding position. WHAT restraint?

Everyone who rides the CP&LE RR, Sky Ride, Space Spiral, and any other ride whose warning sign out front is pointless is guilty of a crime. in the stat of Ohio. Every single one of them has willingly disobeyed the warning sign.

Somebody should ask about this new and "improved" signage at the next Coastermania Q&A session.

The "useless" signage is there for a reason. I don't agree with it, but understand they have to make the park idiot proof. Most people don't take the time and think about the number lawsuits that come through the park's offices EVERY WEEK. People will sue for anything these days and the park does what the lawyers tell them to do, to help cover their butts.

Getting back to the point of this thread I don't my hands up on Mine Ride when train enters the helix before the second lift. I also keep my hands straight up in the air when coming around the corner on magnum after the second tunnel. Does the term "PING" ring a bell?
