Sandusky Area Activities

I only live about an hour or so away from CP, so I never stay out there, but I think I would like to some time. I don't care about staying on-site so I was wondering if some of you Sandusky area residents or frequent visitors could tell me some decent / reasonably priced hotels to stay in. Also, what is there to do in the Sandusky area pertaining to nightlife, restaurants, local activities, fun things to do, any scenic areas to visit, shopping etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry guys, forgot some important details: I'm 26. I'd most likely being going with my boyfriend or another couple, all of legal age. Love animals and "naturey" type stuff, also going out to dinner etc. (hope that helps you help me ;)

It's all about getting around the barrels, or over the fences, right leads, no faults, fastest time and looking pretty when done. What's so hard about that? :)

Maybe knowing your age or if you would be attending with a family (young children?), friends, etc. could help us to come up with some activities in the area you would like. ^_^

Personally, I like the Red Roof in or Breakers Express.

Margaritaville is a favorite spot of ours, but they close at 10 pm on weekdays. Dianne's on route 250, though, has great food and is open 24 hours. I believe there is also a Damon's in Sandusky (near the bay?)

As for things to do, we usually crash after spending all day at CP. But we sometimes head to Sandusky on Wednesday afternoon and go to Norwalk Dragstrip. They generally have events there on the weekends as well.

Nightlife? Sandusky has nightlife?

In Milan, 10 minutes south of Sandusky there is the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum and the Galpin Nature preserve along with a plethora of antique shops around the town square. In Berlin Heights, The Edison Woods has several trails and other outdoor-related activities. In the city of Sandusky, you could check out the Sandusky Merry-Go-Round Museum near downtown or have a picnic at Battery Park, with a spectacular view of Cedar Point. Along the Rt. 250 strip there is Sandusky Mall, Goofy Golf, and Sports City; the latter two will take care of any putt-putt and go-kart cravings at a much cheaper rate than Challenge Park at CP. East of Sandusky is Huron which is home to a nice public beach. Norwalk is home to the drag-strip, but that's about it. Other than going to Meijer at 4am, the area has very little night-life. Hope this helps a little bit.

The Raddisson Inn is a nice play to stay off-site. Only about a 2-3 minute drive to the park.
About 15 minutes west of Sandusky, in Port Clinton, is a way cool sports bar Called Nick's Road House. They usually bill some top notch local bands on the weekends. With reasonable cover charges, of which are in effect solely to keep out the "riff-raff". I was told this by Nick, himself. Decent crowds hang in there. Huge dance floor. You'll love it, if you're into that sorta thing. If you don't like crowds, though, steer clear of it.
You could always camp at Bayshore campgrounds. It is reasonably priced, and very close to CP. If you don't mind traveling an hour or so there is the Toledo Zoo (shameless plug!!) and Maumee Bay State Park.

Take the Island Rocket from downtown Sandusky to Kelley's Island. It's a low key island with a few bars downtown, a nice little winery, some interesting natural features like glacial groves and a state park. Rent a golf cart to tour the island. The Island Rocket also continues on to Put-In-Bay. I'm not sure, by your description of what you like, that you would like PIB. It's a place known for drunken binges, crowded bars, lots of musical entertainment, etc. Put-In-Bat is sort of like a frat party for adults, some people call it the "Disneyland for alcoholics".

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.
It's great to live in Ohio!

Put-in-bay reminds me of new orleans...Its like always mardi gras there. anyway...Toledo zoo is kind of boring.

WTC plan Approved. A structure that will stand 1,776 feet in the NYC skyline. It will be the tallest tower in the WORLD!!!

What?? Toledo Zoo boring? There is always things going on, especially in the summer! Its one of the best zoo's in the nation. Theres Seal training demonstrations, a dog show, children zoo play! Turtle feeding demonstrations, shark feeding demonstrations, also three baby gorillas Juba, B'twenzi, and Juba's sister!(not larger but much better than the Detroit Zoo!!) :) Except for the polar bear exhibit!

Skip Margaritaville. Quite possibly the worst mexican food anywhere. Too pricy for the quality of food and their salsa consists of watered down tomato paste and.....nothing nothing else.

For really great food try The Red Gables. Great food, a little pricy but well worth it. They are located across from Bayshore Campgrounds on Cleveland Rd. in the same location as Trader Jack's.

I do have to agree that Toledo zoo wasn't much to see... if you've been to Detroit, it's small in comparison, but that's a personal opinion. I don't know if it's still there or what city it was in, but when I was younger my grandparents took us to a Wildlife safari park where you drive through it when we were on our Cedar Point trip, it was great. I'll look into that, cause I'd like to remember too. :)

Oh and yes, I realize disaster is spelled wrong in my name, too late to change it now, *sniff*

Its the African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. The website says it is only 15 minutes away from CP. I also believe you get a discount if your a member to a zoo. I'm not sure, they could have changed it.There is also The Wilds which is similar but in southern Ohio.

Yep, that's the place, it's great, you should really consider going there. I'm not sure how far it is from Sandusky though, but that could be easily remedied by a little trip to mapquest :)

Well you could go to Goofy Goofy golf right next to Ponderosa! Just kidding. lol. We were ljoking around about that place last year.lol
Thanks guys. Sounds like it's worth making a little weekend trip or two day trip once. I've been to put-n-bay too. I guess I just forgot about. The other half and I like to party too. PIB or Kelly's sounds good to do a little eating drinking and get a little scenery too.

Half the time, the people watching in places like that is worth the trip ;)

For a taste of roadside kitsch, head to Port Clinton and visit Mystery Hill and Prehistoric Forest (The place with a farce ;) ) There's also Train-O-Rama if you're interested in model railroads, The Marblehead Lighthouse and a car ferry to the islands.

Kelly's Island is really nice. The small downtown has a couple bars and restaurants. There is actually quite a bit of hiking too and the state park has a campground and a free beach.
