Rides of the 70's and 80's

Dino, not only do I remember the Tiki Twirl, I remeber it at part of the famous(?) Trabant Triangle!!!!
I always enjoyed playing miniature golf at the course that stood where Berenstain Bear Country / Peanuts Playground is, between the giant slide and Mama Berardi's french fry stand (which is now Mr. Potato).
To Those who were able to ride the jumbo jet from '72-'76
I understand from my own family members that this ride was pretty vicious. It was known to give people whiplash going around the first turn at the bottom of the first drop. As I said before, I was too young too ride it (and I regret not getting the chance to). I have been on the Whizzer at Six Flag's Great America in Gurnee, IL. which is essentially the same type of ride. The Jumbo Jet, however, was the biggest of it's kind. I remember it being fairly large. My family and I used to picnic in the shelter on the lake side there, and I can remember watching it while I ate lunch. I remember the little radar spinning at the top the ride. My mom told me also that the height requirement for this ride was 54" instead of the normal 48".

Jumbo Jet was a great ride.(Anton is a GOD). I was lucky enough to get to ride it in '76. (Thank GOD for "KISS", because without platform shoes, I was a little too short!). You did have to be 54in. to ride, I'm pretty sure.

I don't remember anyone getting hurt on it. I always thought it was removed because the economy in the 70's sucked, and Cp could not afford the up keep on it. I can't believe there was a design problem because it is still running in Mexico.

I still miss the Sky Slide that once stood behind the Pagoda Gift Shop. You rode down this slide on burlap bags (making sure that your hands didn't touch the sides).
I still remember riding Shoot The Rapids and Bayern Kurve....

You're kidding, the Jumbo Jet is still up and running. Boy, that would be a great shock to Cedar Point. If they heard that, I bet they would take it back if they had the opportunity. I think they would have been able to do the upkeep on it now. I take it you were just recently in Mexico, TooFast. What park is it at down there? If you are ever there again, take a picture of it if you can. I would love to see if it still looks the same or whether they made any modifications. on it.

You had to be 60" (5 feet tall) to ride the Jumbo Jets. I don't remember it as being rough or vicious. The trains were similar to The Bayern Kurve sleds. I do remember the twisting to the top of the tower and then shoot down toward the station and banking into the turn. It was a great ride.
Neil -

Actually, the pattern to the funhouse was opposite what you said. In, one right, two lefts, straight ahead, ignoring that other right turn which merely took you around a mirrored post.

I only remember this because my brothers and I were only interested in that curly slide at the end. The rest of the funhouse was like the ladder and we wanted to get through as quickly as possible (hey, I was 10). This, of course, included sliding UNDER the handrails in the slanted room.

There was supposed to be an ASCII map with this, but it didn't format correctly.

Mark. No, I have not rode Jumbo Jet since it was at Cp. Somebody here at Cp place said it was in Mexico (sorry I can't remember who), So I surfed around and found the web site. Here is the park, http://www.montanarusa.com/ They call it "Tornado" now. This should take you to the pictures of it. http://www.montanarusa.com/tornadoi.html
Old timer is right. You had to be 5 ft. tall to ride, I remember now. Hey its been a long time!
I'd love to see Jumbo Jet back in Cp too, but I highly dought it will ever happen. Cp has always known where Jumbo Jet was at.
I have been going to SFoG and SF Astroworld the last few years to get my Schwartzkopf fix.

My personal favorite ride when I was a kid was the Pirate ride. I always thought the one scene where the two pirate ships where shooting at each other and your boat zigzagged between them was the coolest. And the part at the end where they would hang the guy and his neck would stretch I always thought that was a little gruesome for CP, but I liked it.
Does anybody know why the removed it and if it is still exists?
The Pirate Ride was removed at the end of the 1996 season. I was told by Janice Lifke Witherow that one of the biggest reasons it was removed was due to vandalism from school groups.... which is why it did not operate on weekdays in May (Physics Day groups, etc.). I trust what Janice says.

My favorite scene was when you'd come out of the bar and those two pirates were bobbing back and forth and you'd hear a shout of "Look out for the whale!" You then entered the mouth of the beast and pass its beating heart. Oooohhhh...... And remember, this was not a Cedar Point-built ride. It originally operated at the ill-fated Freedomland USA in New York as did the San Francisco Earthquake. I believe there is one remaining ride of the Freedomland bunch in operation- the Tornado at The Great Escape in Lake George, NY. It looks eerily similar to the Earthquake.

As far as the ride still existing, I am not sure if the ride system is still in place, but most of the characters can be found in the HalloWeekends displays throughout the park each September and October, and I believe one of the skulls from the boat fronts sits atop the HalloWeekends hearse.

Duane,
It all came back to me now!! I clearly remember the mirrored post thing!! Thanks!

Do you remember the bald guy sitting in the chair attached to the ceiling in the upside-down room? I also remember the outside facade of the funhouse that looked like an entire house upside-down!!!

Does anyone have pictures of the funhouse????

Old guy in a chair? Wasn't it GrandMA, rocking away on the ceiling, with the cat sitting by the chair and the cat's tail wagged opposite the chair rocking so the tail was never caught underneath.

Oh man, the Jumbo Jets. I almost completely forgotten about them. Thanks, Mark, for bringing back a memory. What I recall was not so much the intensity of the ride, but the noise - the Jets were VERY loud, and the queue was quite close to the ride. And let me add my vote for a dark ride of some sort - next to coasters, my favorite ride, not matter how cheesy - which would be perfect for a boardwalk.

Hmmm... You might be right there Old Timer Tim... When you try and remember exact details from almost 20 years ago, it tends to be a little foggy, but for some reason, I remember a bald guy..

Regarding the Pirate Ride ending stunt with the guy getting his neck stretched......

That particular gag is easy to remember because last October it was sitting in the space between the Carousel Pavilion (Eerie Manor) and the Frontier Inn (pizza joint) during HalloWeekends.

Spewey,
I believe you're confusing the "Jumbo Jet" with the Super Jets. The super jets worked on hydraulics. I believe there must have been some air compressor working in the motor there, but yes, I know what you're talking about. Yes, they were very loud.

I guess I'd forgotten even more than i thought...

I can't decide what my favorites were. I liked everything. Looking back though, the strangest things when I was a kid were the Blue Streak and the Double Wheel. I remember when the Blue Streak was new and even though it looked huge and scary, it was still inviting and I couldn't wait to ride it. The Double Wheel on the other hand, scared the crap out of me and I couldn't wait to get off of it.
