Question for all!

Hi,

I was just wondering did any else(besides me) get an email from : webmaster@cedarpoint.com on March 31,2002 or around that date or any time for that matter. I got this email from them with the subject line on the email saying: SOS! and all that was in the email was an attachment called Private.zip. So I ,unsuspecting of anything,I downloaded it. But for some reason I couldnt open it. Now I think I have a virus in my comp. This other person in my buddy list was sent an email (from me supposedly) at that same minute i downloaded that attachment.I never sent him that,Now he says I sent him a virus and has reported me. I dont understand all this.

But I am sure it was from webmaster@cedarpoint.com . I wrote them asking what that email was and no replies. Has anyone else recieved this email or something similiar?

I haven't gotten anything like that, but if the file was named Private.zip, it doesn't seem like it would be a virus. Sounds like one the way you described it, but usually viruses end in weird extensions like .vml and .enc. and stuff like that. Anyone else have a take on it, or am I totally wrong?

A zip file is just a compressed file. After it is unzipped, it could have any kind of file extension, including something like .vml or .enc. I think I got a message from CP around that date, but I know I never had that subject name or an attachment.

I didn't get one but a few questions if Jeff doesn't mind turning this into a quick tech thread.. ;)

What program are you using for your email? Also, it's pretty easy to set up something to SAY it's from webmaster@cedarpoint.com and not have it be so don't assume it actually WAS from them.

Other thing... in your folder view options, the standard windows install has a default set to "hide file extentions to known file types". This is probably your best clue as to if it could have been a virus. Windows sets this by default to on. The significance of this? You would have never seen the .zip at the end of the file probably. Also of virus' come named things like blahblah.zip.exe. This automatically hides the .exe so peopel will run it thinking it's a zip.

Just a few notes.. Feel free to email me the answers to these questions but if your friend got an email FROM you aroudn the same time you "tried to unzip" the file. Chances are you're usign Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express and you activated a virus with a double 8.3 filename..

Really there would be no reason for the webmaster to be e-mailing you unless you contacted them. The Funtimes newsletter comes from Funtimes@Cedarpoint.com and sometimes marketplace@cedarpoint.com.

Well heres as much as I know. I know for sure its a virus because my friend contacted aol and they did something and found out it was a virus. I have AOL. I dont know who could have sent that to me with the webmasters name. Ever since I downloaded that file ,every time I restart my comp it says I dont have enough memory to start running certain programs wich are numbers.exe, the numbers change every time I restart the comp.

The virus basically downloads, you try to open it, it installs the virus. Like alot of virus' it uses your AOL buddy list to find new victims, sends the virus to everyone on your buddy list that is signed on at that point in time (and then generally will crash your computer and make aol not start up) Also watch out cause ALOT of these virus' will log your password next time you sign on and email that to someone who created the virus. How does it say its from webmaster @ cedarpoint? The virus goes into your old mail folder and takes perhaps the most recent email you have and steals the author from it to put on your new virus emails (like the one it sent to your buddy). Theres a virus that goes around at school here that takes a random text file off your computer, puts it as the subject and body for an email, attaches the virus and then sends to all email addresses in your list.

Yeah Jeff, but chances are if she doesn't know much about virus's then knowing the name of it will not help her too much more either :-) So we teamed up to give a decent response to the problem. As for fixing the problem, probably go search on yahoo for that virus name and you should come up with several pages telling you what to do.

Shawn

wow, thanks. I just hope I dont get into trouble from aol from this.Do you think they(aol) could trace the virus sender and put me in the clear from sending this virus to my friend. I dont want to be in trouble for sending any viruses. :(

You won't get in trouble. They'll probably notice you received the virus from someone else.

Missy, have you wrote to The Webmaster Of Cp?

If you did there is a virus out there that sends private.zip messages. and it duplicates and looks like other e-mail addresses you've been in contact with i'm gussing Funtimes@Cedarpoint.com?

My 2 Cents...

Another site to visit to rid of worms/viruses is www.sarc.com They provide pretty good information on the latest viruses, and will also provide downloads to rid your computer of them.

www.mcafee.com offers online virus protection (for a small cost) and many other free features. They helped me when my computer started sending a virus to all in my addy book. The virus I had also was designed to send credit card numbers and account numbers that had been used on my 'puter to some dude in Russia. He started a website (porn) using MY credit card. I assume that as it speads, it gathers credit card numbers and account numbers from all infected and he just bounces from one to another as they get shut down.

You should always run an anti-virus program on your computer. That's rule number one of the internet.

Once you have been wiped out, it is to late. So be smart and spend the money now and cry a little, or you will end up crying a lot.

Main thing is thats its Free! I run that as well as my Nortons...
