Pricing trends

I just returned from PKI, and there are two things that I noticed right away in terms of pricing. The first is that the parking fee went from $6 to $7. And the second is that the 20oz vending machine soft drinks went from $2 a bottle to $2.50 a bottle.

I realize that Guide to the Point is a C.P. related fan site and not a PKI fan site. But I wouldn't be suprised if C.P. doesn't match these prices as well. Both parks seem to raise admission prices the same amount each year. And when one park raised its parking toll, the other one eventually followed suit (coincidence?). When C.P. raised its parking fee from $5 to $6, it was done mid-season.

And for those of you that remember this, 10 years ago back in 1990, the C.P. admission price was only $19.95. Add several multi-million dollar thrill rides over ten years , and the gate price almost doubles.

I heard that bottled water will now cost $3.00 this year, instead of $2.00.

Not true... they were $2 for the majority of the season. They very briefly went to $2.50, but after a week or two they set them back because apparently sales went down the tubes.

I heard on the news that CP admission price increased by $5.00 from last season to this season. If that is true that is ridiculous. If somebody answers with "Well, they have MF", it doesnt matter, its still ridiculous.
Look at the bright side.... atleast the price increase was only $5! Good thing they didn't raise it $10 or more! (I highly doubt that high of a price hike... but hey, it could happen)

:D
On the whole issue of per-cap pricing...

If you are a park, which would you rather sell?

0 units at $3.00?
1 unit at $2.00?
2 units at $1.50?

I know what I would prefer. I'm surprised the parks keep making the wrong choice...

While this year's price increase is not proportional with inflation, the overall value of a Cedar Point admission is in line with the rest of the industry. There are far smaller parks with significantly higher prices, and none of them have as many rides as Cedar Point. Again, it's all relative.

Chitown...have you been to some of the parks around the country? I mean, Cedar Point is cheap! Are you kidding? I just spent $45 to get into Busch Gardens in Tampa....and $40 and change to get into IOA...neither which had anywhere near the amount of rides as Cedar Point....BTW, I am never going back to either of those parks...waste of money for me and my fiance...we just bought season passes to CP.

Scott, how'd you get into IOA for $40? Everytime I go it's $46 + tax. Making it roughly $50 to enjoy their 22 attractions. A total rip-off, especially considering how overrated their coasters are.

If CP kept on the curve with IOA, we'd be paying $150 to enjoy their 68 attractions. I'd say they're doing pretty good.

O.K. now, what I meant was a $5.00 increase in one year is ridiculous. I never said the admission price this year to get into CP was outrageous. There is a difference. What I mean is sticker shock. Example would be where I live (Illinois). Our yearly license renewal fee was $48.00 for god knows how long. I know this is cheap compared to other states but when they decided to bump it up to $78.00 in one year that made alot of us angry. My point is you dont sit there for years and years with a cheap price and then all of a sudden increase it by a large margin at one time. Gradual increases keep the consumer for the most part happy. So after saying this, a $5.00 increase at CP is ridiculous.

Chitown..When you spend 28 mil in capital improvements in ONE yr (most ever at CP) ..you just can't expect the usual 1.00 price hike..I for one expected and accepted it before it even was announced..

Actually it's $48 million...

$25 million: Millennium Force.
$4 million: related expenses, including the Giant Wheel refurbishing and relocation, Bay Harbor Inn renovation, and other park improvements.
$15 million: Breakers Express.
$4 million: The remainder of the marina renovation.
