The lake can have quite a bit of an effect in both the spring and fall. A north wind can keep temperatures in April cool, while it can be 15 degrees warmer even as close as Norwalk. The opposite is true in the fall. Locations right along the lake enjoy a longer growing season and warmer nights. That's why you see so many wineries along the lakeshore and on the islands.
But just like the October 7 example, the lake's cooling or warming power is often not enough. Even so, there are a handful of days in April where the temperature within 5 miles of the lake really does struggle.
As for the first week of May, I think we're having similar ideas ... except for the munchkin part :)
