One Man's Trash Is Another's Treasure...

I was thinking, (a dangerous past time I know) about all the rides/attractions CP has removed or changed (i.e. Imax Theatre) over the last 20-25 years. If you had “collected” these rides/attractions you would have quite an amusement park in your backyard today.

Here is the list I can think of…

Double Ferris Wheel, Mill Race, Calypso, Pirate Ride, Super Jets (aka Star Voyager), ½ the Turnpike Cars, The Imax Theatre, Bayern Kurve, Frontier Lift, Western Cruise (not it’s poor step-sister Paddle Wheel Excursion), Shoot-The-Rapids, Country Theatre, Dodgems, Jungle Larry’s Safari Island, Tiki Twirl, Trabant, Sky Slide, Earthquake, Bernstein Bear Country (inside and outside), Miniature Golf (where Peanuts Playground is today), Oceana (the DOLPHIN Show), Sealand, The Funhouse, Kid Arthur’s Court, The Rotor, The Wildcat, (the original down on the Beach), Jumbo Jets…

Quite an array of rides and attractions….I wonder what this list will be like in another 20 years?

What about the Monorail, Rotor, Stagecoach, Frontier Carousel--Avalanche Run (the original)--and I really miss the ferry...I noticed you mentioned Country Thearte--Hobo Band, Cedar Pointers, Beach Band, The guys outside Coasters, the Calypso Band
Wait, I thought that Wildcat is the same on they had at the beach?

I fool so feelish...

Avalanche Run is the same as Disaster Transport.
The old Wildcat opened in 1970 and ran until 1978. The current Wildcat opened in 1979. They are two completely different rides, I believe.
Actually, it's the same ride model...just a different ride. You can check out the photos in the historical section on this site.

Are you sure it is a different ride than what is pictured? If you look closely at the current one you will see the red under many of the chips in the handrails. I think everyone confuses the Wildcat with Jumbo Jets.

I know for a fact that CP has had 2 Wildcats. I believe CP gave their old Wildcat to Valley Fair way back when they acquired the park and Cedar Point Inc. changed to Cedar Fair L.P. They just dropped Point and Valley and combined the park names.

From the 1979 Park Guide:

"A new Wildcat roller coaster, replacing an older model, is near the Space Spiral observation ride."

I would say that the difference between Avalanche Run and Disaster Transport is still significant to warrant a place on such a list -- if you look at the "tombstones" arrayed near the Magnum entrance during Halloweekends, Avalanche Run is listed among the "lost rides".

I recall many of these rides myself, but another interesting counterpart is to think that 20+ years ago, would we ever have imagined what the park would be like today? Just as nostalgic as it is to remember what's been removed or replaced, it is exciting to think what new innovations will appear.

Good find, Gemini. Thanks.

So what's better; skydiving or riding in Raptor's front seat?

This is a bit off topic, I could not help but notice the prices in the 1979 park guide. You could actualy spend the night at Breakers for about the same amout it costs to get in the park today. Parking today is $8 and admission in 1979 was $9.25 hehe...amazing.

wings51, I don't want to sound snotty, but your post wouldn't be off topic in the "How things have changed " thread. It's a few topics below this one. :)

Edit: Maybe to solve this Wildcat thing; has anybody here ridden Rails at Valley Fair!? It is the old Wildcat when it operated there from 1979-1998. Is it different than today's Wildcat?

Fordman,

Your right, but there's just so much goin on around here, sometimes it's hard to keep up and remember everything.

Speaking of parking, I was just at Canada's Wonderland and parking there is $7.50...in Canadian dollars!
