On-Ride Photography: Out of Control

I was at CP last Saturday. I had been under the impression that pictures were permitted on Space Spiral, Paddlewheel Excursions, and the CP & LE railroad. While waiting for the train to leave the station a ride-op came on the PA and said "Photography is prohibited on this and ALL rides at Cedar Point. We don't want your camera falling off the train while we're moving!"

Ok, did something change or has that always been that way? I did check CP's web site and couldn't find the part about picture taking. That doesn't mean it's not there, just that I could not find it. I know I took pictures from all three last year and nobody yelled at me. I only took one this year and that was while the train was sitting in the station.

"For safety reasons, taking pictures, videotaping and filming on rides are prohibited. Picture taking is permitted on the C.P. & L.E. Railroad, Paddlewheel Excursions and Space Spiral"

I'm not aware of any change in policy. Could have been a misinformed ride op.

When I was there this august i did not actually see anybody with a camera on a ride. But what i did see was at on-ride photo stations, they censored photos of anyone with a camera, cell phone, etc. out.

Disney does allow it. Although none of their rides are near the size of Millennium or Dragster.

I visited Disneyland in Anaheim back in August, and while riding the Pirates of the Caribbean several people were taking pictures. A voice on a loud speaker said "Please refrain from taking pictures. Thank you!"

Same thing happened in the Haunted Mansion as well.

Were they using flash?

Disney allows cameras, but not the use of flashes inside the darkrides.

The other big issue in dark rides is IR lights. A lot of video cameras (including just about everything that Sony has sold in the past five years) have nightshot features, and what a lot of people don't know is that those cameras also have IR illuminators on them which have the approximate effect of shining a spotlight on the surveillance cameras in the ride.

^^ That's what got me busted at WDW last year. I forgot to kill the flash on my camera and got a message from the guy in the control booth.

I was at Cedar Point on 10/14 and 10/15. I thought of this thread immediately, because on our first coaster, Blue Streak, the train stopped halfway up the hill. Seconds later, you see a ride up walking up the lift hill, and a voice from the speakers "Please refrain from taking cameras or ANY loose articles on the ride with you, or we'll stop the ride and make sure you secure them. And that doesn't please people you delay for a ride." It delayed our ride by at LEAST 10 minutes. Then our very next coaster, Magnum, it happened again. This wait however was a little longer, as the walk to tohe top of the hill is longer. This was about a 15 minute delay. I thought this would be a problem all day, but thankfully, it didnt happen again the rest of my trip. ( MF was stopped near the top of the hill while I was in line for it Saturday night, but I heard people saying a seatbelt or lapbar came undone, not a loose article)

Did they come over the loudspeaker on Magnum to warn the people staying in LHP not to bring loose articles on Magnum?

Instead of creating a new topic, this topic seems close enough.

I was flipping though some old photos of cedar point from 1985. The amount of On-Ride photos I have is amazing.

I wonder if in 1985 it was ok to use a camera on the rides.

I have, Sky Ride (I know that is still ok today)

White water landing just before the first little lift hill out of the station. And another one halfway through the ride near the ground.

I have the turnpike cars

I have the antique cars, but that one looks more like someone was in the station taking a picture of me.

But I also found it interesting that the Calypso was where raptor is.

The ferris wheel has trees not too far away from it. I didn't see any photos from being on the ferris wheel, but my memory seem to think I used to take pictures from the top.

And the Dolphin Show.

Kinda interesting to see what wasn't there in 1985.

Actually, it is on the no on-ride photography list.

I didn't realize that there was no picture taking on the Sky Ride, hum.

I still to this day try not to walk under it from fear of being hit by something accidently, or intentionally dropped from it.

I'm surprised nobody has brought this up.

If you're holding on to a camera, phone, stuffed animal, etc., then you're not capable of holding on to restraints or safety bars. Of course people rarely hold on, but if you should come to a sudden stop on the ride, wouldn't you want to be able to brace yourself by grabbing the bar in front of you?

Cameras and other loose articles prohibit following proper riding position. Not that holding on is strictly enforced, because it's mildly unreasonable, but it is definitely helpful in rare circumstances. I know if I were ever to stop in the safety's at Magnum, I would definitely want to be able to grab the safety bar. *** Edited 11/7/2006 9:00:39 PM UTC by c webber***
