I'm fixing a couple of minor little issues with the next version of the forums and I was wondering... do you think anyone cares how many times a thread has been viewed? It's a common feature in some other forums, but I wasn't sure anyone actually cared that a topic was viewed x number of times.
Hopefully today or this week I'll have the new version up in beta form (meaning you get the first chance to break it). Don't look for any significant new features, or even some of the old features, because they aren't done yet. I just want to get the basics up and testing post-haste. It's a total re-write from the ground up, so things will be quite different on the back end, even if they don't look different from where you're sitting.

What goes up, up, up, must come down and up and down and upside down and around...
I can't really think why that would be important, to be honest.

I personally don't like the number of views. I don't see it's point really. What I think would be a good thing to see is a list of all the members so a person can access thier profile without having to look for them in the forums.

Why? Because the 'new post tracker' never works quite right, particularly if you switch browsers or whatever, and if it's a thread you're actively participating in, you can see that it hasn't gone anywhere if you're the last person to add to it... :)

The reason that I ask is that there are a lot of forums out there (UBB, vBulletin, etc.) that have lots of features that I think are, quite frankly, useless. Those stupid avatars are another one I find pointless. Every little thing you add affects performance, and I want the fastest out there.
Now that you explain a good reason for who made the last post, Dave, I think that's a good idea. May not make the beta but I'll have to strongly consider that one.
I think of the GTTP audience as being the good "average" Net user, not a junkie, computer nerd or whatever. Your opinion counts. ;)

Number of viewings is not important at all to me, it's just another useless feature that doesn't add to the experience.

Who's afraid of the big bad... sea gull?
Wow... I'm surprised it's that unanimous. Out of curiosity, what other features (in other forums) do you find to be totally useless?
Avatars - actually any ranking of members by number of posts.
Also, I don't like the ability to "lock" certain topics at the top, regardless of the date of the last post. It's often used for announcements, but I find it annoying. That's a personal preference - maybe the feature has a use. I'd rather just see the thread with the newest reply at the top.
