No rash guards on water slides?

shamrockcb's avatar

Hi all, just got back from Wildwater Kingdom for the first time this year and my son was refused entry to a few body water slides because he had a rash guard on- this has never happened before. Obviously, it's easy enough to take off but I like to have him wear it for sun protection, and because I can find him a lot easier with that bright rash guard on. Has this been enforced at Soak City as well? I've never had an issue with this in previous years, a little weird.

Thanks!

Just wore one this past weekend at Soak City. Went on the body slides and had a crazy fast ride! Saw a lot of guys and kids wearing them down slides. My son wears one as well and had no issues.

What is a rash guard?

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

...and is there a wedgie guard?

Seems no different than if a woman had a one piece bathing suit on or if the person was wearing a t-shirt with their suit. There are a lot of children's bathing suits with UV protection that look like this. Weird. I don't see why it'd be a problem to wear one.

I don't get why that would be a problem either. I have my boys wear soccer jerseys with their trunks for sun protection and I can find them easier both in the team colors. Were there people wearing shirts on the slides that weren't allowing the rash guards?

To be specific, he was stopped on one of the slides in the fort/bucket area- the life guard said he had to remove his rash guard if he wanted to ride the slide. Furthermore, there is an announcement about no shirts when going on the big body slides so he ended up carrying it with him when he went down the slide. I understand rules because they are there for a reason but this was a new one that caught me off guard! And he was wearing a swim suit rash guard, not a t-shirt!

Per WWK site:

  • Life vests, hats, bathing caps or t-shirts are not permitted on slides. T-shirts are permitted on tube slides only.

Per Soak City's site: Shirts are permitted on the slides but are discouraged since they may slow a guest’s progress down the slide.

I ran into this problem at WWK last year. I simply just took my shirt off for the slide but a little girl before me had to go down the 100 ft tall stair case because she didn't have any clothing under her water shirt. She was like 10 so she didn't need any. I rode Summit Plummet at Disney World Blizzard Beach (tallest body slide at the time 2012) with a shirt on and had no problem so I don't see why it needs to be an issue.

SV ruins all other rides.

If I was president of aquatic apparel, my first course of action would be changing the name of "rash guard" to something else.

That said, it seems a little nonsensical that this wardrobe selection would deny one's access to a water-slide. It's like a little wet-suit.

I can understand how a cotton T-shirt may affect your speed on a slide since they become bulky and heavy when wet but slick, silky, synthetic fabrics like the rash guard or the particular type of shirt I got for my boys shouldn't have an affect any different from a one piece womens swimsuit.

I think shamrockcb should call customer service at Cedar Fair. I think they should revisit the policy on swim shirts, especially if they are appropriately fit. They are made of swim suit material. Their policy and implementation makes me think they are pretty ignorant about it and are in need of being informed. It makes me wonder if my two piece suit is acceptable, I hadn't had a problem in the past. I'm not a big fan of the fast water slides, though.

I agree about the name, Rashguard, it sounds like a hydrocortisone cream.

If a girl can wear a bathing suit that covers her top (and obviously she should) why can't a boy wear a top too? Boys sunburn just as easily. Just becasue it is socially acceptable for boys and men to be topless at the water park doesn't mean they should have to be.

I will visit Guest Services next time we go to discuss this. I'll follow up to let you know. I'm happy that Soak City does not seem to be as strict enforcing this as we are headed there next week.

My boys have never been asked to remove their shirts at Soak City.

My son wears one typically and we had the same thing happen last year at Wildwater Kingdom. We haven't had a problem at Soak City though that I know of.

They probably are worried that the shirt will ride up and block your face. Either blocking your breathing or vision. That or maybe you would forget that you had it on and then don a fanny pack pushing you over the threshold to get a rash guard/fanny pack induced beating by the other kids.

Could it be something as simple as manufacturers requirement? Most of the slides at WWK are newer and I believe from a different company than those on the original east side of Soak City (with the exception of the mat racer).

wow yet another rule to give people a hard time. Those shirts look like a wetsuit top that clings to your body. It is made of that nylon clingy material. No different than a girl wearing a tankini, which is a two piece suit with the top that goes to the midriff. If the tankini top flops up into the girl's stomach a little on the slide, then boys should be able to wear a wetsuit top. same thing, but with sleeves.
