No More IMAX?????

A few people working at the park mentioned the IMAX Theatre may be history soon....along with other shows at the park....(To make room for coasters) I just went to CP for the first time this last weekend so I don't know how long the IMAX has been there and if this was just BS.... sounds interesting though...........
If I were you, I probably wouldent worry about IMAX leaving anytime soon, was it a Ride Pride (HA) that said it???!!!

Keep in mind that not everyone that visits CP even likes coasters.  It is a good idea to keep some attractions that appeal to these people.  There will always be shows and tamer rides.  That's part of what makes CP great - there is something for everyone...

I have also heard this from a few different people. I heard they might keep the building for another entertainment type attraction but no more IMAX movies.
Could this be another Fascination / Johnny Rocket Surprise announcement after the park closes?????

When they built the Cinema, IMAX theaters were few and far between; now they're all over the place. The greater Chicagoland area has at least two that I can think of, so they're not so unique anymore. I suppose it would make a certain amount of sense, at some point, for the Point to put that land to a different use.
Although it is worth noting that Cedar Point's IMAX theater is still one of the largest IMAX theaters ever built.

When Star Wars: The Phantom Menace was released, I went to Worthington to watch it on an IMAX screen and I was amazed at how TINY that screen was (about 40x50) compared to the 66x88-foot screen at Cedar Point.

They better not be taking out the IMAX, where else can I go on a hot day in July to relax and sleep in ice cold A/C.  I enjoyed the shows that they've played in that theater, except for the Michael Jordan one.

And like MDOmnis said, they need things other than coasters to appeal to the large crowds that they get.

Hey Rob when its hot out in July you can always count on going over to Fascination to cool off.  Ohhh wait, nevermind.

Maybe they're having trouble finding spare IMAX parts ...

I thought the Jordan IMAX was one of the better ones in recent years. The Alien Adventure was alright for a little while, but it go boring. Extreme was just atrocious and I actually walked out...which was the only time I've ever done that.

Spare Imax parts...funny.  I thought I read somewhere about the possibility of an ice skating show.  It seems to me that would require a major retrofit to the building but I for one would prefer that to a dumb Imax movie like that dolphin one a few years back.
Maybe they are putting the rumored Snoopy Ice Skating show in the IMAX theater.

CP fan since 68.

Maybe if they do so desire to rid of the IMAX, they might be looking at a better style of IMAX one in which there is very little of.  I would of cource be talking about Omnimax.  Although there is one in Cleveland, I would see it as a great addition as the shows won't be as scientific.  This would be a great change in my opinion, awful expensive though :)
I doubt it will be replaced with another "movie" type of show. CP's live shows are always the best, and a movie just isn't something I think they would replace it with. Unless it is going to be made like the 4D movie at Six Flags!?!?!?  The ice skate show that someone said seems more likely since that rumor seems to keep coming..
Actually, a lot of people like the IMAX but the theatre itself is getting a little worn.  I know there's talk of a new "different" AKA non-$7.00 cheeseburger, restaurant going in somewhere. It may be just a new theatre, show or event or it may be a new eatery. But I do know that Mrs. Cronenwitt promised more jobs in live entertainment so I don't think entertainment is going anywhere soon.

~~ Really- it literally rocks... check the out field!~~
I personally love the IMAX format! But wish CP would take better care of theirs, and get new films that are entertaining. The last really good one they have had was "DREAM IS ALIVE" filmed by NASA in space. There are many IMAX films on video that I wish I had seen at CP. My favorite is SUPER SPEEDWAY,about INDY car racing. It sounds great in my home theater system, but lacks the BIG screen!

It's amazing how long it has been at the park.(1975). I've been to other newer IMAX screens that sound so much better.

I do agree with Dave. Most screens are smaller than CP's. They don't leave you in awe when you first walk into the auditorium.

I think I did a calculation a few years back that showed Cedar Point's screen to be the largest IMAX screen in area (5,896 sq ft).

But I agree that they should take better care of the theatre. I would be even more devastated if the IMAX disappeared than I was when Fascination disappeared. Even though the movie selection over the past few years has been dubious (though I did enjoy Jordan more than I had thought I would). I liked Speed, too.

My favorite is still Grand Canyon: The Hidden Secrets. The soundtrack is awesome.
