No Grass for Mantis.

I've always wanted to know this. Why doesn't Mantis have any grass in its fenced in area like the Raptor does? Is this because the people in the midway can't see Mantis's fenced in area as well as they can see Raptor's fenced in area?

The only place they could put grass would be in the many twists area, or the second part of the ride. Looking at a picture of it I like it better without grass in there. I don't know why, all i can say is the track sits really low to the ground all through there. but that is not the best excuse.

Any time you think about putting grass in an area, as yourself one important question: How do you get in to mow it? Remembering, of course, that you probably have to do the mowing while the ride is operating, of course...

I've never liked the lack of grass there. It always reminded me of a carnival ride.

Or a Six Flags park.

They should spread gravel over that area. Decorative gravel would make a world of a difference.

That brings up an interesting observation of mine. The next time you go past the double helix at the end of Raptor, look at the gravel underneath. Interestingly enough, we now have a helix pattern in the gravel thanks to many of the riders who prefer not to close their mouth when riding. Dave A. is defintely right, though, mowing would be a difficutl chore; but to be truthful, the lack of anything over there has never really bothered me. I don't think it bothers a whole ton of other people either. Most people are usually too busy trying to stay oriented to notice the lack of land scaping while riding that thing.

When does CP mow the grass? At night? I never have noticed anyone cutting in the day durring operating hours.

I have seen them mowing, or 'sand blasting' (I don't know what it's called!) the picnic areas around 8 AM when I'm heading down to Pet Chek.

They do it before the park opens. Anyone notice how Woodstock's Express has no grass at all?

The park's landscaping staff does its mowing inside the park from 6am-9am and works the rest of the day in areas outside the park (i.e. hotels, Camper Village). Why is there no grass under some of these rides? I think budget has something to do with it, being that it is cheaper not to plant seed. Also, it's easier to find lost articles. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that there they are hard to reach areas. Take a look at the Blue Streak, though, There is a lawn under the entire ride. Not fun to mow, especially when you hit your head. But that never happened to me :-) Same problem with the Gemini's transfer track area.

Note also that one thing the Po!nt has a shortage of is decent topsoil. Look at the "grass" trying to grow in the sand under Magnum, for instance. Blue Streak has a good lawn under it...and likewise there are good lawns over by the Foods offices, under Raptor, and a couple of other places up in the front of the park. I suspect that owes a lot of Boeckling, who imported tons of topsoil around the last turn of the century. These days it's easier and cheaper to use no vegetation under the coasters, and flower beds everywhere else. Keeps the mowing to a minimum, anyway...

The most striking thing about the MF site when I was there in November is just how soft the ground really is. It's like walking on the beach, and you can tell in a lot of the photos. There was so much sand that it covered that area of the Frontier Trail. By the time I was done walking around there, my shins were killing me! In any case, I'm surprised anything can grow there!

If the soil is that loose that is not really a very good thing. It means that replanting the trees is a must, otherwise they could have erosion.

And if they have erosion, a couple of things will happen:

1) The Magnum will sink.

2) The peninsula will become smaller, creating a space problem.

3) A new roller-coaster will have to be built in the parking lot

4) A monorail will be needed to get people to the park.

During construction of Breakers East, the soil was also very soft. I was in a truck that got stuck in the sandy substance. This common throughout the peninsula. I don't believe erosion is a concern.

Yes it is! that is why they have huge brake walls. They dump leftover cement from new rides and most recently (before MF) Frontier Town. It even stated in Queen of American Watering Places that protection must be put on the eastern side of the peninsula.


Jeff you are right I was thinking about back in May. Most of the ride (the new land) has no grass. That makes sense.

I think Vince was referring to erosion around MF, which is much different than beach erosion.

Seeing as how the footers are the size of a small house and sitting on bedrock, I'm not terribly concerned about it.
