I received this press release that I thought might interest several of the folks around these parts. I have the actual release on company letterhead in a jpg. file. It's legit. If it were bogus, I'd reference the lemon chill guy.
=====================
May 14, 2001 - Confirmation has been received on a local attempt this summer to break the World Record for the most Roller Coasters traveled in a 24-hour period. The latest record was set in 2000 in California with 40 different roller coasters and is recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Although he could not get specific, organizer Phil Guarno, General Manager of the Harrisburg-Hershey Marriott confirmed that this record would exceed 50 coasters and would take place in August. The team of 4 will start in Virginia and work their way through Maryland, Washington DC, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Rite Aid Corporation has donated the use of their corporate helicopter on one leg of the journey to make the record attempt possible. Guarno said that he would be auctioning off the other 3 tickets to the highest bidder, starting at the minimum bid of 5,000 dollars with all proceeds going to the Children's Miracle Network. As of this press release date, one ticket has already been sold for an undisclosed amount. The goal is for this fund raising event to raise 50 thousand dollars for the organization through corporate sponsorships. "This will be a once in a lifetime experience for a true roller coaster enthusiast. If a man can pay 20 million to go up in space then surely 5-10 thousand dollars is reasonable for this feat." Guarno noted. The parks that are participating in the event include: Kings Dominion, Va.; Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Va.; Six Flags America, Md.; Six Flags Great Adventure, NJ; Dorney Park, Pa, Kennywood, Pa, HersheyPark, Pa; and two undisclosed theme parks. When asked why the vow of secrecy around this effort, Guarno noted that other efforts are on the way in the UK and the Midwest, USA to try to set the world record this summer. Further information can be received by contacting Phil Guarno directly at (717)558-4600.

Now I haven't done the math, but I suspect that the two undisclosed parks likely are NOT Cedar Point or Six Flags Aurora. If Rite Aid is lending a helicopter for one leg of the trip, it's likely to be the Hershey-Pittsburgh leg, a distance of about 200 miles. My top-of-my-head estimates would put this trip at about 24 hours, if you include Knoebel's and Idlewild.
The sad thing here is -- it looks like nobody is going to have a real shot at breaking this record now without some SERIOUS corporate sponsorship. I'm guessing that my company isn't going to buck up the 5 grand to put me in that group of four (I live in Harrisburg) and that's going to leave the real coaster enthusiasts out of this.
On the other hand, could it be that a group less dedicated might fail at the attempt?

If practice makes perfect and nobody is perfect why practice ?
Blue Streak Laps: 63~~45 in 1 day
I think it is pretty cool. I was thinking about that myself. You might be able to borrow one from a news station and have them cover the event at the same time. They did a nice job from the charity angle. What big company would say no if proceeds were going to the Children's Miracle Network?

Hey db your from harrisburg? I live up in hazleton.
This subject is gonna be beat to death and there after. I've given up trying to think of different ways to beat this record. Someone with more money and connections is always gonna beat this record by doing something coaster enthuisats deem unfair and bias.

"Nippy!! Where the hell are ya?"
Would they be allowed to use a helicopter? The crew from CA drove to all their destinations and had to adhear to all highway and motor vehicle laws.
Guinness requires only that no laws be broken while setting the record. That is why all speed limits and laws had to be obeyed.
To the best of my knowledge (although I can check the records) there is no statute prohibiting the use of a helicopter for transportation within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Hey guys, I'm back!
Cedar Point will not be one of the parks. This I know.
Duane... you should post that on CoasterBuzz as well (where D. Curley of GRP recently made some posts regarding the whole thing).
