New types of rides at Cedar Point

Now don't get me wrong. I love and appreciate Cedar Point for all of the great rides they have built over the years. But after Millenium Force is done, I wouldn't mind seeing some new types of rides. Has anyone been to Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando? They have some of the coolest new rides. There is one called the "Amazing Adventures of Spiderman" where you get in to these cars that are on a track. Its indoors. You put on these 3D glasses. And as you go around the track there are movie screens that are blended in with real scenery. So on the screens they have spiderman and his enemies flying around and stuff. But its in 3D and it looks and feels so realistic. At one point it looks as if Spiderman is sitting on the front of your car. And the movement of the cars coincides with the action you see on the screen. Writing about it won't do it any justice. But those that have been on it know what I'm talking about. A truly amazing ride. I wish Cedar Point would start building rides of this type in the future.
I rode a type of thing like that, but real rollercoasters are so much better to me.

Oh I agree, there is nothing else on this planet that even comes close to the feeling of being on a coaster. Not that I know of anyway. But that ride I was talking about was such a different kind of experience. I just wish I didn't have to go all the way to Orlando to ride it. Lol!

I've heard that ride cost IOA $100 million. If $100 million is correct, that's 4 Millennium Forces, 8 Raptors, 12 Magnums, etc. I'm no marketing guru, but who do you think is getting a better return on investment? Besides, what's the capacity on Spider-man?

I understand that IOA really turned some heads with that ride, but really ... which would you rather have ... just Spider-man or the entire CP coaster collection (which, by my estimates, collectively cost CP under $100 million)

I know better to say the word "never," but I would tend to highly doubt a ride that costs that much is in Cedar Point's near future.

Well the Cedar Fair Co. is definitely not as big as Universal and you make an excellent point, but nonetheless I would love a ride like this a little closer to home. And who knows, if CP continues to raise their admission by 5 bucks every year, we may see a ride like this sooner than we think.

I heard too that CP was suppose to expand the park by making the main parking lot part of the park and they were going to move the parking lot up near the main road. Anybody else hear this rumor?
Another thing to consider - CP is seasonal and therefore has 6 months less than Universal, Disney, etc. to collect gates, concessions, etc.
Invariably, the mega budget rides (I'll use Disneyland as an example) all have heavy hitter corporate sponsorship... Indiana Jones - AT&T, Space Mountain - Fed Ex, and others. Not sure is CP wants to head down that road or not - maybe someday.

In reference to moving the parking lot - the rumor has been around for some time now, with nothing to prove it's true. Again - maybe someday.
Oh no, it's happening all over again!
"The rumor has been around for some time now..."...like about 25 years, actually...

Cedar Point is an amusement park. They restrict the shows to the theatres, and concentrate on "real" rides elsewhere. One of the things you'll notice at CP is that their rides are mostly self-promoting...with the exception of Disaster Transport (and with that one you can hear the lift hill) you don't walk into a mysterious building...you get to see exactly what the ride is going to do to you. It makes the park more lively-looking, it makes for a more thrilling overall experience, and it lets the park concentrate on doing the things it does best. Personally, I don't see that pattern changing in the next few years. Why should it? It's been tremendously successful so far!

By the way - and you may find this hard to believe, but it's true - the final cost of the Spiderman ride was close to $250 million dollars. Ouch.

Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill.
I doubt you'll see CP change the amusement park feel. To me, if you added more dark rides and such the crowd 16-21 wouldn't care for it much. And when youth gets bored sometimes they start getting destructive or just have utter disrespect. Places like IOA or anything in Orlando is basicly a tourest trap, a place where familys spend time. I know a great deal of familys head out to CP, but a good majority of youth from college or kids in high school make many trips.

I would like to see a Choas type ride. Don't really know if its a type but I rode in opryland. It was indoors and when you boarded the crew gave you 3d glasses, that made you look like Geordi on Star Trek. It seemed like you were going through glass and flames along with sound effects! If anyone knows about it tell me!!!!

I doubt CP would put that ride in because they are not big on theming there rides. Inside dark rides I mean. For instance DT. It is not themed the best in my eyes at least. CP has always been the leader in coasters so that is where they will probably stay

Welcome back Millennium Force riders...We all want to know how was your RIDE!!!!!

I think one of the things that makes CP CP is the variety of attractions. Along with the coasters, they have plenty of other stuff to do. I'm glad to see they added Chaos, Camp Snoopy and the Diving act...infortunately, they do lack good dark ride.

I don't know exactly what I can add to this but as a long time resident of Western PA I am no stranger to Cedar Point. However I just recently relocated to Jacksonville and now Islands Of Adventure is my closest park. Just need to comment on both as I've visited CP every year since 94 and been to IOA 4 times in the past 9 months.

Spiderman is truly phenominal...the first 1 or 2 times. After that the thrill is gone. Dark rides are not even comparable to coasters, apples and oranges. Spiderman did indeed cost $250 million and they'd have been better off with 10 MF sized coasters in my opinion. Though I'm a tad biased...I'm an amusement park fan, not a theme park fan. I don't care about the ridiculous amount of detail at IOA...just slap a great coaster on a pile of dirt and I'm paying to get in.

And just for the record, Hulk isn't as good as the hype it receives. The Dueling Dragons on the other hand could give raptor a run for it's money. Well, the Fire Dragon at least. Ice is average at best.

Back to the topic...CP could never put in a ride as expensive as Spiderman. Hell, no park probably could. Even Universal will have a hard time outdoing themselves. Only Disney (ugh!) will have the resources to pull something better off and if you're a Cedar Point fan...you have no business being at Disney World. Let the Point stick to what they know...world class coasters!

I think the next coaster will and should be an inversion record breaker. CP is sorely lacking in inversions.

they lack in inversions and wood

--tear down the Mean Streak and put up a roller coaster
I have heard several people write that CP is lacking in the inversions department. What about Raptor and Mantis!? Plenty of inversions on those rides. Personally I hope CP does not get another B&M coaster in the near future. I have said before that I think that CP will get a Thurst-Air type coaster next. The ride is different enough from a traditional coaster to be unique, but it still fits in with CP ride philosophy (big, fast rides, no theming).
Lordgonchar - That is a terrific point about the thrill being boring after the first couple of rides. Wish I'd thought of it!! :)

I guess I'd never really thought it - but one of the things that makes coasters exciting is that you never know what you'll get and the ride will be different depending on where your butt is parked.

It's always the same song and dance on a dark ride where you're looking at computer generated images (Star Tours is another example - great the first time, lousy after that).

I think CP would be best served to head down the road that they're going - stick with the thrill rides and leave the theming/big budget goodies to the tourist traps. *** This post was edited by Mango Madness on 4/7/2000. ***
I tend to agree that dark rides loose their appeal after the first couple of times. However, I noticed there is another thread on this site where people are wishing that CP would have kept the Pirate Ride. I think this is because the Pirate Ride was fairly old and people have memories of riding it as a child. I wonder if these new hi-tech dark rides will have the same sort of appeal in 10 to 20 years? Will people continue to ride them, or will the effects look dated? While a good coaster will continue to be fun even after it is no longer the fastest or highest (like the Gemini or Magnum) I am not sure you can say the same thing for a dark-ride.
