...it just wasn't meant to be... <facepalm>
So back in May we bought one of those refillable Souvenir Cups for $12 (or whatever the price was) with the intention of using it throughout the year and getting the refills on the cheap. It's a great idea and we drank for free the day we purchased.
When we got home... my wife had a brain fart and put the non-dishwasher safe cup in the dishwasher -- total meltdown.
Our next trip to CP we bought another of the cups for $12 so we could take advantage of the free drinks for the day and cheaper drinks the rest of the year.
The next trip to CP we actually forgot to bring the cup. No... we didn't buy a new one... we just bought drinks for the regular price.
During the month of July we had a flood in our city with unfortunately sewer backup in the basement... which is where the hero of our story -- the cup was located and submerged. Cup ruined... back to no cup again.
Our next trip (yes, we had season passes) we purchased yet another cup for the $12 or so dollars to take advantage of the drink deals.
Which brings us to our latest and probably final trip to CP this past weekend. Believe it or not we remembered the cup this time. We arrived on Saturday when it was storming out... so we went to Breakers and had lunch at Perkins (very nice by the way). An hour or so later when the rain let up we went into the park. A couple hours later when we started getting thirsty, we reached into our backpack and found no cup. We sat the cup on the table in Perkins and left it there. I suppose we could have went back and see if it was saved, but at that point we decided the cup is cursed and we are better off without it.
Summary: 3 cups purchased at $12 a pop = $36
Countless drinks having to be purchased without the cup = approx. $50
A summer of memories = priceless
Moral of Story = <FACEPALM>

Addendum...
Water is free, at every single place that serves fountain drinks, and is usually ice cold. You may have to get a couple of cups (they give you tiny ones), but it's still free.
Water might be free, but sometimes that's all someone drinks outside of the park, and maybe wants to treat themselves to a soda once in a while.

And that was exactly our reason for wanting the cup.
basically my post was to share what we though (my wife and I) a funny story with our experience. That is all.
Pogues, I enjoyed your experiences and had a good laugh--at your expense!
Oh, and I did feel sorry for you. My sympathies.
I feel for you, man.
Often times on halloweekends, one can walk around the park shortly before closing and find several abandoned souvenir cups in the patio eating areas of the quick serve restaurants. A thorough washing and they are good as new.

I totally agree. But really, the amount of soda purchased in that story seems like a far cry from "once in a while".

wow... critical are we... Let's see... the cup was shared between 3-4 family members and possibly filled 2-4 times during a half dozen or so visits at CP... each visit pretty much open to close.
We don't drink pop usually in our daily lives -- so for the record, it wasn't "once in a while".
Oh and by the way, sometimes we didn't get pop... go the ice tea.
Try to share a funny story and people start getting critical.
Peace, out!
Relax. I personally don't care how much soda you drink. I just thought "once in a while" wasn't necessarily accurate in this case.

I think we ended up purchasing 3 this year... One at CP which was stolen at Kings Island. Another at Kings Island to replace said stolen cup. Then a 3rd at Kings Dominion as we forgot to bring the Kings Island one on our trip. Have used both the KI and KD one at CP with no problems though :)
We purchased a souvenir popcorn bucket on Saturday of our last trip, since we planned to just walk around, ride the train, etc. It was a great investment by the end of the day.
Turns out beer makes mediocre popcorn pretty delicious. :)

Honestly, I don't recall where we purchased it, but we were able to refill it anywhere popcorn was sold. The bucket was available in probably 3 or 4 locations scattered throughout the park. Sorry I can't be more specific than that.
Brandon
I wouldn't be so kind as to call it "mediocre popcorn". It's pretty terrible, especially if it's been sitting a while, like it often does at Red Garter and other places.
I don't know about Red Garter, but the popcorn we had was decent. Certainly not great, but about what I'd expect from an amusement park. Definitely better than most of the parks's offerings, in my opinion.

Too bad you didn't try this with the first one: My mother had accidently put the first one I bought in the dishwasher and it was warped. So I brought it with me and politely asked the person at the kiosk right inside the main gate if there was any way I could exchange it for one that wasn't warped. They took the warped one and replaced it with a brand new one (without the free drink wristband, of course) for free with no hassle at all.
Believe it or not, someone put that one in the dishwasher as well so I tryed again my next visit (same kiosk) and they replaced that also with no hassle. Just thought I'd mention it because I was impressed that they would do that considering it was my fault.

Well, that would have solved only one of OP's problems, the initial washed souvenir cup. It seems he is not a lucky man, or at least, not when it comes to souvenir cups.
I've had the opposite experience. In fact, I've had mine refilled at no charge even long after the initial free-refill day had lapsed. They hand it to me and say "here you go" or "thank-you" and then turn their back on me, or begin helping the next customer.
Now, I'm not one to steal, but when the park's improper training, or poor employee decisions, affect me in a positive way, I'm not going to point out their mistakes. Cause hell, there's probably somebody smoking behind me breathing cancer all over me and I just want to get out of there! ;)
