Midway flooding from weather

While at the park on Aug 2 some rather violent storms rolled through the area shutting down the rides. We were in line for Raptor when the rain hit and many people in the queue lines left. We wanted to stay under the station roof of raptor and wait it out, but the ride ops forced us to take cover under the ride. Did we absolutely have to leave? We had waited 1 hour to ride and now we lost our place in line! There were about 100 people packed underneath the ride and everyone was soaked. When the rain seemed to die down to normal soaking, we left and entered the midway. There was about 7 inches of water flooding the midmay from the beginning of the skyride to the other side! Is it normal for so much water to be in the park? Upon walking further back towards the back of the park, the speed store right next to the station of TTD was flooded with water and about 5 workers were bending down with buckets to throw the water out from the floor of the store. Is this normal weather for CP and can CP design a better drainage system? Most of the items were ok in the store but I did see several broken glasses and soaked/dirty shirts.

I think the question that should be asked is: Was it a normal storm or a very powerful storm? You said it yourself, when the rain seemed to die down from a normal soaking.

If it was a constant problem, something would be done about it, but flooding has been happening to many parts of the Lake Erie region from Ohio to PA due to many powerful storms and excess rain over the past month.

The rain that flooded the Speed Store was not any more violent than rain I have seen in the past, and it also did not rain as hard for as long as it has in the past. It's a mystery to me why the store, as well as a number of other parts of the park, flooded Saturday.

What are you talking about? I cracked open the door of the electrical room of WT and couldn't see our Queue line.. that was a terrential downpour! Our low zones flooded to the point that the concrete stopped.... and all that $#%@'n! mulch went everywhere and plugged up some sewers. Plus the hail was fun too.

I missed the "terrential downpour" and hail. Must have been in the wrong part of the park. ;-)

Right. They couldn't possibly have been looking after your safety or anything. Heartless bastards.

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

No, that couldn't be. They would actually be human if they did that, and not robots.

A friend that was at the park Saturday said he could not believe how hard it was raining. He claimed he saw WT and MF both get struck by lightning while he was in the parking lot.

I got there around 7 p.m. The day looked beautiful to me, except for the huge puddles here and there. It kind of sprinkled on and off after that....but it wasn't bad. I guess I missed all the action!!!

You got to personally experience why they do not allow tents in Camper Village.

You are not safe in the stations during high wind or lightning. That is the simple reason why you were told to go under the ride. Is there something diabolical about that?

The place is a frigin peninsula. Where is the water supposed to go when it comes down like that? I live in South Florida and we get some serious rain. Our town is very new and probably has the best drainage system in Florida. Still, there are certain periods of heavy rain when the drains cannot work fast enough. The concept really isn't that difficult to explain. Fill up your bathtub and then take a garden hose, turn it on all the way, and put it in the tub. Pull the drain and see what happens.

When I was there, last Saturday with Avalanche Sam, we arrived shortly before the terrential downpour. It really started coming down when we were by Gemini. We walked to the Sweet Tooth and grabbed ice cream. After that, we were hoping to go to the arcade and tried to grab the train there, but the train was down and I stupidly ran through a puddle, well more like a pool, about 12 inches deep. The cheese on a stick shop was probably flooded and was definitely surrounded by at least 8 inches of water.
A friend told me that there were kids actually swimming in the SC parking lot.

I was there on saturday, and it did hail and it was an insane downpour, with good sized hail. Me and my friend steve were huddled with a group of people at the wicked twister lockers. From there, at one point you couldn't see the water tower through the rain. I don't think twister got hit, we were right next to it durring the storm.

When the storm passed, all the midways were flooded, we went to the main midway, and found HUGE puddles, one kid was swiming in one. I myself went splashing arround in the giant puddles, my friend thought I was being an idiot, but I had a lot of fun!

Edit: as a side note my friend steve said that he saw TTD get hit, but I didn't see it myself.

I was there also, we made a dash into the snoopy boutique. It also flooded through the back door. I never saw any hail, but there were some huge rain drops.

It was raining really hard and I wasn't surprised that there was some flooding, but the race store was a lake.

I was there last night and saw some storms, although they were nothing like what you are describing on Saturday. It rained hard for maybe an hour or so, then went down to a drizzle. There was some flooding, but not a whole lot.

I did see what was probably the most inconvienient time for a break down. I was one train away from getting on Gemini when all the coasters went down for weather. As I was walking away from Gemini, I noticed the yellow MF train sitting about half way up the lift with people on it. The storms rolled in, it poured rain, there was lightning everywhere, and those people sat there for a good half hour in those conditions. It looked like they got the lift working on some kind of manual override because after about 25 minutes, the train began to creep forward. It took close to 5 minutes for it to make it over. There was a huge crowd near the tunnel on the Frontier Trail (myself included) who stood in the rain watching the train inch up the lift. Everyone started chanting "go, go, go" when the train made it to the top, and cheered when it began sliding down the hill.

While all this was going on, there was an empty Mantis train halfway out of the station, and another one on the brakes. Well, the first 3 cars were on the brakes, the rest of them were standing sideways in that banked turn. Those people were also stuck there for the duration of the storm. They were actually out there a lot longer than the people on the MF lift. At least the people on Mantis had a few ride ops and maintenence people out in the rain talking to them.

CP has always had a drainage problem with HEAVY downpours. For the most part the midway drains just fine. Any storm sewer backs up with unuasually heavy rainfall. They are built to withstand most storms, however what we experienced the other day was out of this world.

Blue people fly sideways when it rains....

The water table is just so high, not surprising. That is why nothing at Cedar Point is under ground more than a few feet.

Now tell me Cedar Point is running out of space.

I have seen Raptor stopped in the Trims with people on it during rain.
Why do they stop a ride when people are on it? Is 1:20 too long to wait just to get everyone back on solid ground?
I believe that rain can trigger the sensors which may cause a block to be tripped, thus stopping the train on the brakes.
