Midway Bands

When I was at CP this year I thought something was missing. Then I thought...it was the live marching bands that played in the midway.

Do they still have them?

Trent

They probably do.

Expect to see them in late august or september, though.

To my knowledge, they usually have local High Schools and such play, and its still summertime for most of them. As the year starts, expect some bands to show up. :)

I remember seeing them play in June last year.

From what I know, the bands play through the summer, but are more frequent in May. Expect to see them early in the day.

As a matter of fact today 3 of my friends played in the Copley Fairlawn marching band which performed at 9:30 this morning...thats sorat ironic
Since I went with my old high school band this year as an assistant director (I'm a music ed major), I can vouch that the bands still do play there and fairly frequently. Walt's right though, the best times to see them are in May and in early June. Normally, the bands get to the park sometime right after the park has opened, and they go in and do their little parade route (down one side of the midway to the 2nd sky ride station, and then back up and out of the park), and then the rest of the day is given to the kids to enjoy the rides. They are given a discount rate, but I'm not sure what it is off-hand. When I was in high school 3 years ago, I believe it was somewhere in the range of $21-25 for the day. My band director friends tell me that is one of the easiest trips to plan for a band, and that the CP staff makes it very convenient and simple for the directors. Simple and easy trips are the best kind. *** Edited 8/15/2004 1:43:42 AM UTC by Jeff Young***

There was a band almost every day in July around 11 am. They would usually march from the front of the park, around the Sky Ride West Station, and back.
I was in one of those bands last season, and the season before. These trips to CP was the time when I really got into Roller Coasters.

They still have them. My sister went this season, and she will be going next season too.

They're usually in durring the first few weeks of opening, and last few weeks before closeing. They don't preform when schools out...

Guess all those bands in July were imaginary then.
Are you refering to High School Bands?? There was one playing when I was there this past June. Or are you refering to the days of the Hobo Bands with 4 or 5 members. They were fun too!

Please remain seated until the ride comes to a complete AND final stop.....

I'm referring to the Hobo band.

The Beach Band and Hobo Band have been gone for some time. I know the Beach Band was there for the '95 season, but that may have been the last one.

According to my Aunt - She used to be in the Hobo Band in her younger days - The Hobo bands stopped playing in the mid 80's. She says she misses that kind of thing too!

The Hobo Band and Beach Band were really great traditions. I'm sorry that they are gone, I think they added more to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the park than people realize.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

I went with my high school band twice, once in 98, and once in 2000. We went on a saturday in October both times. It was funny seeing other people in the band march into a grabage can they cant see.
Shows how new I am at this. I didn't even know there ever was any other bands besides the high school bands. Of course, I would have been 12 in 1995 and really wasn't an "enthusiast" that early in the game. I guess I'm a slacker. :) Anyway, being that concert and marching bands are my thing, does anyone know what the instrumentation was for these bands, and were there ever any souvenirs related to them? I'd love to combine my two favorite things in some retro souvenirs.

There were usually a Trombone, Trumpets, a Bass Drum and I'm not sure what else. Seems like there should be something else... As for souvenirs -- I don't think there are any unless you can find someone who was actually in the bands... I would ask around the Sandusky School District since the majority of the band members came from that area...!
