Memorial Day Week Trip

My girlfriend and I are quite frankly, tired of six flags over georgia. We are planning a trip to Cedar Point from 26 to to the 31st. We plan on visiting the park on that Tuesday and Wednesday. Is that a good idea? Is 2 days enough to be happy with your trip if you have never been? Also, what is there to do in the area ( 1 to 2 hour drive from Cedar Point), other than the amusement parks. Anyone got anything special? Maybe romantic? Fun? Something not many people know of?

We live in Montgomery, Alabama, so we want to take full advantage of the trip.

two days should be good

I went last summer for my first time and that was only for a day and a 1/2. I got every coaster maxair, skihawk, and some rerides in! :)

have fun at the point

Two days is never enough to satisfy my thirst, however, 2 days IS more than enough (especially a week day in May- the park will be mostly dead) to get your fill of all the rides and things to do at Cedar Point.

2 days during the week- you'll get in EVERYTHING you want to see and do, multiple times over. Keep in mind, though, that the park closes early those nights- 7pm. You won't get as much time in as you would on Friday or Saturday, but the lines are so short during the week, you can almost hop off and immediatly back on for most rides.

As for close by, there are lots of parks, some islands, a mueseum or two, and a few other small things. I think there are some outlet shops near by.

The main sandusky page (do a web search on Sandusky, Ohio) shows some local attractions- hisotical stuff, shopping, ferries & cruises, and other stuff to do in the area.

Enjoy your trip! My family will be down for that weekend. :)

Looking forward to Cedar Point- July 4th-5th, 2007!

well the days im going it closes at 10 PM! :-)

Since youre coming up from Atlanta I would highly suggest a stop over at Kings Island on your way, in fact you could purchase a Maxx Pass at CP or KI and get into both parks and at 3 days it would be worthwild to do. I would especially suggest it if you have never been, while some dont like it or say its past its prime the Beast is still a coaster any "serious enthusiast" must ride at least once, and as a bonus the park is supposed to open its "new" Verkoma Flyer that weekend.

Also, assuming you have a SF pass you will pass SFKK on your way up to Sandusky, never been there but if you have the pass and the time it should be worth it.

As for non parks, you can go to Clevland and see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Also you might want to guard against the chance of rain and schedule 3 days at the Point just in case Ohio gets hit with a day long summer thunderstom/deluge, or snow storm you never know what the weather will be like in May.

A must-do is Kelley's Island:

The island boasts a state park, and its virtually unique glacial grooves formations. A winery or a two and pub make for a romantic get-away. You can rent golf carts on the island to putt around.

Also of interest, Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island. It has a good bit of nightlife in the summer:

Kelley's Island can be reached by ferry from Marblehead, on the northern tip of Sandusky Bay. Marblehead can be reached via Route 2, continuing west from Sandusky. Put-in-Bay can be reached via ferry from Catawba Island (itself actually only a peninsula).

While in Marblehead, check out Marblehead lighthouse, one of dozens that ring Lake Erie. Remember while visiting Lake Erie, that everything you can see is fresh water. Those of us who live in the Great Lakes region tend to forget how impressive that is.

There are also some worthy attractions in Sandusky. One of my favorites is the Carousel Musuem:

Hope this helps, and have a great trip!

If you're in the neighbourhood of driving 2 hours or so from the Point, you could swing around the lake to Windsor. We're across the river from Detroit and offer a beautiful river front, Casino Windsor, and there are a few different wineries in the area. You could head to Leamington and visit Point Pelee, Canada's most southern point. You could do Windsor as a day trip, but I would suggest 2 days depending on what you're interested in. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about the area.

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

Vince, you know the thing that impressed me about Windsor, the one time my wife and I visited? It was about six years ago -- we were heading to the casino, obviously, and it was late afternoon/early evening. We had gotten a little lost, so we were kind of driving around randomly. It so happened it was Halloween, and everywhere we went, kids were celebrating Trick or Treat. The thing I'll always remember was how many of them were wearing home-made costumes. It had to have been at lest sixty or seventy percent of them. It was refreshing to watch; here in the States, anymore, probably 80% of the kids you see are dressed in pre-manufactured, crappy costumes from Wal-Mart that don't take any effort or imagination to create.

Sigh. Almost makes me wish I were Canadian. But I could never go metric. ;)
