Why are there breaks on the first hill?
I think it would cause more rollbacks.
The reasons for the BRAKES are structural tension and roughness. After the first year(?) they determined that the wooden structure was under too much stress and wouldn't hold up... also it is very rough and when it was faster it was even rougher. If I am wrong, then someone please correct me.

Steuks!!
Rollbacks are NOT caused by over breaking unless it's early morning runs and the operating procedures state that brakes are to be turned off when running early morning cars with no passengers.. ala Gemini...
FYI.. the Mantis rollback was NOT caused by the trims on the hill.. it was caused by the 65pmh winds that were blowing from a certain direction. Same with the Mine Ride rollback that happened before the season started before the first main drop.
The Gemini rollback on the weekend before the Gemini 100 was caused by early morning test runs, with empty or sandbagged trains, and the trims before the helix being closed when they were supposed to be open.

I'm interested it hearing where exactly the brakes are on the first hill. Is it that it slows/stops you before you drop? Is that the only section they brake on MS?
Yes they are just after the crest of the firt hill.. If you're in the front half of the train you will feel them, back half.. not so much.
Ok.. listing of the brakes on MS.. (not counting the ones on the transfer track)
#1 bottom of lift (to synch speed of the train to the chain.
#2 and #3 after the crest of the first hill.
#4.. C-block brakes (also refered to as mid-course, there is more than one but I refer to them as one set), are used to slow the train for the second half of the ride. Can also be used to stop train at that location in case of a safety issue..
#5.. Arivial brakes.. as you head towards the little drop into the loading station.
#6.. there is also one brake on the dip
#7.. pre-station block brakes.. Used to hold trains till next dispatch.
