Mayfly season, when does it end?

Hey all,

I was considering a trip to the Point in the earlier season before it gets deathly hot. I remember two years ago going to CoasterMania the first weekend in June and those damn bugs were everywhere. This trip I'm thinking about (not CoasterMania) will include my Mother and I *know* she will not stand for all the bugs. Now I know that these swarms cant last too long, so my question is, typically, at what point in time do they disappear?

There are actually two kinds of bugs at CP...muffleheads and mayflies.

You can probably get your answers from reading these articles from this site:

Frankly, they are both more plentiful early in the season, and tend not to be quite as bad in July and August....during the "deathly hot" times of the year.

A small tip for anyone who is planning on visiting durring May or June - Don't wear bright clothes! Two summers ago I wore a bright green shirt and went on SNF I belive it was. After that I went to Millie and while in line I was swarmed by the bugs. I ended up having to go to the gift shop and buy a new shirt because they would not leave me alone. I'm not sure if it was the water (other people were wet but didn't get attacted) or the color but it sucked.

On Lake Erie, the bug problem only truly ends when it gets colder, or within the next 3 weeks before it gets warmer.

Hey Jeremy,

Try setting up a pop-up camper with all those darn muffleheads. After dealing with the hassle the last two years, we are shacking at Breakers Express this year.

The muffleheads you are talking about at Coastermania have a short life life spand, about 3 - 4 weeks if I remember correctly from the info we were given at check-in at the campground. Obviously, that was the first weekend in June. We went back 2 weekends (actually Sunday and Monday) later that year and there was nary a mufflehead to be found, the weather was great and the crowds weren't too bad.

We went the Tuesday after Memorial Day last year and I don't recall seeing any Muffleheads but they were definately out in swarms for Coastermania.

Too bad you won't make it to Coastermania this year. Hope to see you sometime this summer.

Ciao - Lori

um, it ends?? =O
Looks like the muffleheads are beginning. I just captured this webcam pic:

There are always smaller ones this time of year, but they're not the big juicy matured ones you deal with the first week of June.

How are the Mayflies/Muffleheads in the first few weeks of the season? I was planning a trip then.

Ah, Kirk, my old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space.

Those damn bugs are BAD, right through June.

As "bad" as they might be early in the season, they've never been bad enough for me to not take advantage of low crowds.
