Saturday night, my girlfriend and I were waiting in line for GateKeeper right before park closing when it literally started raining mayflys all over Cedar Point! There must have been hundreds of thousands of them! You couldn't take a step forward without crunching them under your shoes/sandals and you couldn't speak without the risk of them flying into your mouth! It was quite a sight - albeit a somewhat disgusting one!
After telling my parents of this, they told me this happened once when they took me to Cedar Point as a kid. I did some further research on Google and it's not uncommon to see swarms of mayflys from Lake Erie in June/July.

Definitely mayflies.
They usually are here and gone in a week or 2. I hope they're gone by Thursday.

Lol, having their lifespan would suck. Live underwater for a year, and then this:
Sprout out of water, HEY OMG, BROS!!
Food! Light, Women, PARTY! YOLO, literally

This is common every year from about May 15th-end of June especially in the communities along the Erie waters such as Sandusky, Huron, Avon lake, Rocky River, etc. They sometimes come back in the autumn.
The first year Millenium Force opened, I took a ride on it at night, and after going down the 1st hill, felt stinging which I first thought were raindrops. When I got off, my friend told me to "look down", my white T-shirt was covered with about 300+ of these annoying critters. No joke. I haven't worn a white T-shirt to CP or taken a night ride on MF since.
On a side note: these critters have changed the outcomes of baseball games (for the better) here in Cleveland. Just ask Joba Chamberlain of the Yankees: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g84l2edUFgA. It cost em!
We were at Put in Bay today and had a few stowaways that we kept finding on the car, on our shirt, etc. They are harmless but stinky and annoying!
If I'm not mistaken, I think the mufflehead invasion precedes the mayflies. The muffleheads are somewhat smaller, a month or so earlier my kids thought they were the mayflies.

Yeah, the muffleheads look more like mosquitoes, though they don't sting. You can see them swarming in the distance and they look like smoke clouds.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
I could be wrong. But, the Muffleheads are out in some manner almost all season.
