Mayflies

Can anyone tell me if the Mayflies are bad right now? Heading down tomorrow for a couple of days and am curious. Thanks
They were horrible at CoasterMania! Anyone that stayed at Lighthouse Point could probably agree.

I don't know what they're like now, but they don't really get in the way much, they're just everywhere. :)

They were all over everything at Coastermania! They were in the bathrooms, covering the wood in the tunnel under Mean Streak, on the midways, everywhere. But I went back on June 21, and they appeared to be gone.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
I was just there 6\27 and they weren't too bad. I didn't see alot of them. I thought they only were around the first part of the season?

Hence the name "MAYflies" -- but they will be around for most of the season, just a lot fewer.

My worst mayfly experience: walking on the sidewalk by Breakers (near the beach) in moccasins and feeling them pop underneath my feet with every step! *SHIVER* :)

Actually they are not Mayflies. They are called Muffleheads. We stayed at the campground for Coastermania and they gave us an information sheet on them. They were horrible at Coastermania. We stayed at the campground again just 2 weeks later and hardly saw any.
Mayflies and muffleheads are two different types of flying friends that inhabit CP because of the lagoons. The muffleheads are about 1 centimeter in length, and they look like they have fuzz around their heads. They fly in these tremendous swarms, that always seemed to be aimed at me when we were waiting for the train to get past the gate. :)

Mayflies, on the other hand, are about 1.25" long, and they cling to everything rather than fly -- they cling to walls (especially around restrooms), and they're all over the ground around lights. They honestly look like bait! :) They have the really long wings and are harmless (so are muffleheads, for that matter).

So wait... Does that mean that Mayflies and "Fish Flies" are the same thing? Now I get it...

Yes - "Fish Fly" (which is what they're called in Canada) is another name for Mayfly. BTW, when we were staying at Lighthouse Point back in May, there were swarms of muffleheads thick enough to blot out the sun. Yum.
THis makes me laugh. One night, my friend and I ran all the way from MS to the front of the park in like 5 min, but got stopped by the train. We were watting away the clouds of flies away from our heads and all the people on the train were waving at us. My friend screamed: "We're not waving, We're swatting gnats!"

Quite funny. I think i ended up swallowing 3 clouds.

CrystalKat almost has it right. The mayflies are at CP because of the proximity to Lake Erie, not just the lagoons. Mayflies actually live for 2 years in the lake before "hatching". Many times mayflies will be in thick swarms after a rain because the water drops seem to break the cocoon or egg (whatever they are) that the mayflies are in. Once they start flying they only live for about two days. They fly around just to mate. They are absolutely harmless, they don't bite or sting, but they sure can make a mess. The way they land on you and cling to you almost makes them seem like pets sometimes.
Go over to the ball fountain and check them out!

Live for FUN!

Don't let life fly by.
I remember sitting entrance at Disaster Transport and picking them off the wall - I'd have one on each finger, and one sitting on the top of the candy cane. People would ask, and I'd explain that they were harmless. The kids loved it, because we'd name them, but the parents weren't too thrilled! :)
