Management Education

Hi guys, I'm a junior in high school, and I know alot of questions come up regarding working your way to the top. I have read other posts and I have a general idea, however, I have one question.

Does anyone know what college degree the current general manager at Cedar Point has?

If I work my way up, I don't want Dick's job. I want to manage the park's operation, not it's finances. I have options such as a resort management degree or a business degree and I'm just trying to figure out what would be best.

Thanks!

Isn't Josh L. actually majoring in amusement park management? I think you would just do business management though. Just a guess.

I think it's more of a 'hire in as a seasonal and work your way up' kind of thing with Cedar Fair. You don't just go to college and hire into the GM spot.

I know a lot of the people from my era that were zone supers were business majors, but not all. They all had worked their way up from peons. That's how Jack Falfas did it.

So it would still be a business major even thought it's more of a management job that they are doing?

Guys I realize that you have to work your way up, but I'm sure that the current GM has a college education. *** Edited 8/5/2006 2:31:40 PM UTC by skifan23***

The major isn't the most important thing with this company. It's more about your common sense, and work habbits.

I beleive Mr. H has either a Marketing or a Public Relations Degree.I think he may also have a business degree as well. I'm not positive on the business degree.

In all honesty you'd be better off going south or west if you wanted to look for a park that would hire someone in without any seasonal experience.

Only due to the fact that most parks out there are year 'round and consider it more of a career than a seasonal job for high school/college students.

Ride on, MrScott!

I've been told by many that an MBA is the way to go. But like DBCP said, it is also a lot of staying with the company while doing a very good job and advancing through the ranks.

Three things you need to fix anything in the universe: duct tape, WD-40, and a hammer. Duct tape if it moves and it shouldn't, WD-40 if it doesn't move and should, and the hammer as the last resort.

Most of the people who are in upper management positions in the company now started out as peons back in the 1970's, spending their summers at the Point . Some of them got positions there right out of college, others a year or two after. All things said , I will reinforce what I have always said. You have to absolutely love what you are doing. It's not the easist job in the world, especially during the operating season. Kiss goodbye summer vacations, it ain't going to happen. Long days on property, on call all the time, it can wreck havoc with family life. It was my life for nearly thirty years. Now I have a Monday-Friday job 8:30-5:00, with no phone calls on my days off, or odd hours of the day or night. Do I miss it? Hell yes I miss it, but the likelyhood of me getting back into it are slim, as it's become a young persons business now. I'm now simply an enthusiast, who knows what it's like behind the scenes from first hand experience.

Yup... The guy on here whos SN is 'Top Thrill Dragster' is planning on attending the University of Central Florida because they offer a degree in amusement park management.

Didn't Kinzel not even go to college and just worked his way up?
