Magnum Trains, Problem

IF you have not already done so, make sure you read Dan's recent Trip Report to get a more in depth view of recent craziness with the devil (red) train. SO Thursday night, Red was taken off twice to get wheels replaced. They did not replace some of the worn ones which is why it needed to pulled off twice. 2-3 Red was the big problem seat.

So I am there the next day and get up to the platform. Soon as I'm up there I hear "we will not be loading this next rain, and later '"magnum is down mechanical." Then I see red train getting wheels replaced, again! So that's probably 4 wheels in the span of 16 hours. They should really try do this overnight.

Here's the kicker. I sit in 2-3 red thinking "I just got new wheels, this should be a smooth ride". WRONG! One of the wheels must have been replaced but the other one still must have been bad because the ride was still bumpy as heck, but not nearly as bad as the night before.

There must be a couple bad axle's on that train, under that seat and one of the ones near the back. It wobbles around too much. Also the lap and grab bars are peeling to some extent. In addition, It appears some lovely guest were hungry and took a bite out of some of the lap bars padding :(.

Magnum has been running great this year except for a few problems. I have been on the platform at least 10 times while they replace wheels (that's a conservative guess too). One week they were down for around 15 minutes at the same time each day to replace wheels. Dose maintenance not inspect the thing anymore and replace wheels during non-operating hours?

My only guess is that the wheel rehab job this year was inferior. I'm sure they look at the wheels every night and day for ones that need to be replaced. those wheels seem to be wearing down more quickly than they should. I've seen more wheel changes on Magnum this year than this and last year on Millennium Force!

Yeah Joe I noticed that red train was not running yesterday, and I knew why from reading Dan's TR the night before.  Your guess is as good as mine as to why the wheels are needing replacements so often.  I just hope they figure out the problem with red train soon so that they can get regular 3 train operation up again.

We don't call the red train the devil train for nothing.  Its also my favorite train as well.  Blue and Black have been running great, the red train always, always has problems.  I suggest that they give me the lead car of the red train and auction the othe five cars off and just buy a new train.  Since they are buying trains they can buy three Millennium Flyer trains for Mean Streak as well.
Hey its wishful thinking.  It can happen.

GCI doesn't sell Millennium Flyers without a coaster to go with them.

The best hope is that Playland movies without the P&C trains.

Yea guys, we also noticed the bad back (63) axle on the red train for a good part of the season and figured that with it like that, it was going to start chewing up wheels.  Honestly, it never seemed to cause that much of a problem.  I think throughout the course of this season, red has gone from possibly the best train to the worst.  In the beginning, I didn't like the blue train, but now I'd definitely take it over red.  Black has been the smoothest/most consistent performer the whole season if you ask me.

Ok here is the deal. This past weekend, Magnum red train's axle was bent in the fifth car. They took off the fifth car on sunday night and fixed it. So far there haven't been any complaints, but we will have to see how long that will last. We only had ten mins total of downtime this whole weekend. At least one of the rollercoasters in the park is running smoothly!

Reason for everything breaking Sunday:

Sunday morning by breakfast bill at Bob Evans came to $6.66. And that was the night of the full moon. And of course,I was there all day! :)

And honestly, EVERYTHING broke on Sunday. Millennium Force lost its lift, something nonspecific happened to Iron Dragon, Magnum had some minor problems, Gemini had a (non-interrupting) lift problem, Mine Ride was losing one of its "4"'s, the train was down all morning for the Millennium Force cleanup, I saw C-sets on Gemini and Magnum...and to top it all off, the crowd was HUGE. The park was having the kind of day that seems to be commonplace down at Kings Island, only with much better ride capacity.........!
