Loud boom near Maverick

Today while I was waiting to get on Maverick, I heard a loud boom. When I got off, Skyhawk was down and it was running earlier. Do you think that sound came from Skyhawk?

A friend of mine was in the park and said that one of the cables on Skyhawk snapped.

When I rode Skyhawk today, the cable looked frayed

This is just not Skyhawks year, thankfully I did get a ride in earlier.

Enjoy the rest of your day at America's Rockin' Roller Coast! Ride On!

Here we go again.

This is just crazy. I know stuff happens, but for the same thing to happen on the same ride more than once within a short time? Hmm...

The scary thing about this is, we were in line a few minutes before it happened, but we left because the line was moving too slow. Had we stayed, we could've been on the ride when it happened. I just hope nobody was hurt.

I'm wondering if this will be Skyhawk's last year.

It's been there 7 years. It isn't gong anywhere.

Cables wear out and snap. Well designed rides are made for this to happen without putting anyone on the ride in danger or causing any damage to the ride.

They'll replace the cable and Skyhawk will be back up and running within a couple days.

^ but the problem is they just replaced the cable.

They replaced both cables or just one?

Secondly, just because they just replaced it doesn't mean they didn't get a bad cable from the supplier.

I was there last night for TTD ERT (love these three letter acronyms) and overheard someone on line for TTD said they were in line when something "exploded" on Skyhawk. They even eluded to a few people were hurt, not sure how true it is. But when I arrived at the park around 7:45 pm last night Cedar Point Fire and Police were responding to something (I park in the back of the park by Gemini).

So not sure what happened, hopefully no one was hurt, hopefully they can get this figured out, Skyhawk is awesome! Only thing that sucks about the ride is that it is too short!!

Ride on!!

Last night someone mentioned an accident while he was in line for Skyhawk. Apparently there's was a boom, he saw the cable snap, a few pieces of debris fell down somewhere, and then the swing took about 15 minutes to come to a complete stop.

^ is that a long enough ride for you staaber?

Was it the cable that snapped, or was it the seal/piston/cable guide drum/stuck valve/ect. Pics to diagnose please?

that's what I'm talking about! but not at the expense of losing the ride or anyone getting injured....hopefully no one was hurt and the ride isn't out of commission for too long....

Whether the ride is safe or not when the cable snapped because of back ups, that had to be terrifying for those that were on it. I saw the people that the cops were talking to. They all looked like teenagers.

Believe it or not, most people don't have full knowledge of how coasters or thrill rides work. The riders who were on it probably thought that they were about to die. I'm sure it was very traumatic for them, and they could be scarred for life.

Even though they may have not been physically hurt, mentally they could be. So no, I don't think it's far fetched for them to want it to be tore down.

I know I won't get on it again. I understand that accidents happen, but twice in 2 months? No thank you.

^ That post deserves a facepalm
Good call when something breaks throw it out.

I never said throw it out, and it doesn't deserve a face palm. However I did say that I understand why they (meaning those who rode it during the incident) would want it gone.

Millennium Force had it's lift cable snap in 2001, Dragster had it's launch cable fray in 2004, and both rides are still there and running.

And where was the second problem in two months? The only one I could think of is that the cables were old and needed to be replaced, no problems though.
