Does anyone know where I could buy a LIM for a good price. If you have to know what I am doing with it, I am making a long track for a car to roll down and I am planning on launching it down the track with some LIMS. PS It needs to be kinda powerful.
While I am sure LIMS are very costly, you'll probably blow out your neighborhood if you try to power one up.

LIMS by nature are not very powerful. For launch systems, they stress the hell out of the drives with insane currents to get a train to launch. Also they need to use a lot of motors.
If your looking for full sized LIMs used on ride, buying Superman The Escape for $250,000 plus cost to tear the ride out. Say $500,000 total if you scrap everything but the motors, drives, and other control equipment. That would bring the price for each motor/drive/ect down to $5,000-$6,000.
If your talking about small toy LIM, they aren't made. You would have to build them yourself with drives too. You would have to be good at making drives for normal motors before even thinking about attempting a LIM drive or you will fail.
LIMs operate on three phase power. Residential power, I belive, is one phase. I don't know how you would go about getting the three phase power.
You could make your own mini LIM. Basically all you have to do is make a solenoid. Then of course, you would have to figure out a way to attatch a magnet to whatever it is that you're launching. Then, mount it on a track, secure the solenoid onto something, etc, etc.

That is not a very practical choice for the task you are trying to accomplish.

You might want to check the Army-Navy surplus. Saw some in the clearance bin few days ago, might still be there.
Dude, You have got to be insane. A LIM????
Seriously, A LIM????
How on earth would you possibly want a LIM?
Jeez, this just blows my mind. Why? Because first of all, your first question. 'Does anyone know where I could get a LIM for a good price?' First of all, Your not getting a LIM for a cheap price, and no, people dont know where to get one. 'Yeah Bob I just bought my LIM at Walmart yesterday, got it for $500. Good Deal, Huh. Second of all, your second sentence. Im launching a car down some long track. Oh really, may I ask what the He!! your launching and what ur launching it on? First of all, you need, as multiple people have said, LOTS of power. Your going to blow out your neighborhood. Third sentence. It needs to be kinda powerful. Well, i may not be as smart as the next guy to say but... Your not going to find one without a load of permits. Ever watch the show Mythbusters? They have to get the BOMB SQUAD and the FBI involved. So, to answer your question. No, no one knows where to get a LIM besides the roller coaster manufactures. And, contact of the FBI would be useful unless you want to get in trouble for disturbance and screwin around with harmful things that could malfunction and cause bad things. Walt, Closing this tread soon would be a good idea.
I think you may have confused "LIM" with "explosive". It's a common mistake, don't worry about it.
At its very basic a LIM is just an electric motor that has been unrolled into a straight line. Instead of circular motion you get forward motion.
It isn't dangerous. It isn't illegal. You don't need permits (except maybe construction, check your City's codes). Expensive? Maybe. And LIMs are not the domain of roller coasters only.
Here are some dealers:

Nice work Rider.
Guess they're a little bit easier to find than magum50 would have us believe.
And I don't think Cedar Point contacts the FBI every time they want to build a new coaster. Heck, the most they probably (I don't know the entire process) is contact the city so they can get building permits and possible height zoning variations. And unless a member of the bomb squad is also on the building commission, I doubt the bomb squad was notified when WT was built.
Does anyone else find it funny when noobs (especially ones who spell the name wrong) are telling Walt he should close threads?
