So back in 1989 they saw Space Spiral in one corner and assumed Magnum was in the other corner.

I guess so Gomez. If an airplane ever hit *shudders* a rollercoaster, I'd freak out and cry.
(I have a terrible fear of airplanes.)
So stoked for 2010 :]

I have heard rumor that CP is in a restricted flight area, but last season I remember a couple of instances when planes would fly fairly low. Can anybody confirm or deny these rumors?

I don't believe the airspace above and around Cedar Point is a no-fly zone. I think Walt posted some aerial pictures a couple years ago, and they looked pretty close to me.

Just to throw it out there but just say a small plan it one of Cedar Points roller coasters like Magnum or TTD or MF. What do you think would happen to them? Would they be able to withstand that force of a hit or come crashing down?

They would blow up with such force equal to 893 Atom bombs. Then the world would come to an end as we know it. Then the survivors will turn into zombies and rule whats left of the world. They would look like this: http://www.wildbluffmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/legend-artwork.jpg

Haha I was looking for a more serious answer then that. :)

I think it would depend on the circumstances. I doubt that TTD would withstand a plane crash unless it crashed near the base of the tower. In that case it wouldn't create a huge moment. In MF's case, I could maybe see the structure taking minimal damage if the plane hit it head on, rather than from the side of the coaster. I'm sure the part of the track that took the initial blow would definitely fail. And of course this is assuming a SMALL plane.

Why are we talking about Airplanes hitting rollercoasters? That's a sad topic. Since you guys have already discussed what would happen to Millennium Force and Dragster, what do you think would happen to Mean Streak? I know it's a lot shorter then some of the other coasters, but I'd thought I'd ask.
Don't talk about plans hitting Dragster OR Millennium! I'm going to have nightmares now!!!:(

I think that Millie and Draggie might be able to handle a small plane, but a huge jet colliding into Mean Streak would be a disaster!

I'd be pretty excited if Mean Streak was destroyed.
I would never go to Cedar Point again if something like that happend. I hate airplanes just as much as construction during the summer.

Wings are very strong structures and would tend to either slice through or bounce off, depending on the momentum (mass and velocity of the craft) and the object it hit. The rest of the airframe would be more likely to crumple if it hit hard enough. Something small and slow like a Piper Cub might even get caught on a coaster's framework like a fly in a spiderweb, with only a little damage to the structure.
Hopefully nothing like this would happen. If it did some moron would try to pass a law calling for all rides over 100 feet tall be torn down.
Just say no to trims
Thats better :) I thought I heard that Cedar Point roller coasters or some of them would withstand a hurricane or something like that. I am sure they could but I think that would be worse if it got hit by a plane.

You know it's the off season when you're talking about CP coasters getting hit by planes :)
