Light Towers on the Midway

Looking at the Pagoda Cam, I noticed they had erected new light towers for Luminosity. Can anyone comment on the capabilities of the lights we are seeing there? I recognize some of the stage lights, but am no expert. I guess I was expecting more lights like the remodeled MaxAir games area.

Looks like Chauvet COLORado 1-TRI and a few Source 4 Ellipsoidals so far.

If I remember correctly, they will be able to project images on the midway. I thought I heard somewhere that they will be Peanut's characters.

Tough to say with the picture quality but I'd agree with 99er. Source 4's are pretty much an industry standard, they are everywhere. They are typical ellipsoidals that don't do anything fancy other than light things or use gobos, unless they have something like a seachanger in them, or they are attached to a right arm or something that gives the fixture or beam movement.

The COLORado's are LED color mixing wash lights

Any ellipsoidal can do that so long as you have a steel or glass gobo with whatever image you want. They likely just be static projections, similar to what you see in the halloweekends zones when you see the lights with a pattern, its the same deal.

I remember them saying something about gobos and image projection. But I have no idea what a gobo is.

The picture I was looking at is better quality then the webcam ;-)

But unless they are spending the money on new projectors, Id say they are using gobos to produce shapes/Peanuts on the ground and buildings. It would make the most sense to do that unless try want full on animations.

I hope that helps you :)

Good lord I hope they arn't using DJ quality lighting like Chavet or American DJ in this setup!

@Jason a Gobo is a steel or glass disc with a pattern/logo/shape cut out of it that is projected by the light onto a surface. They can be full color or single color. Check out gobosource.com for examples.

Those washes are from Chavet. You might be surprised at the amount of fixtures used at parks that are from American DJ and Chavet. Sometimes the simplest effects can be done the cheapest way.

The Chavet line of COLORados are actually really good fixtures and are tough for outdoor use. The park has used them at Starlight, on the laser screen and last fall in Red Garter. They are dependable enough when you need lighting fixtures fast. Which is what I am guessing happened here since we know this show was not planned out before this winter.

I suspect all you're seeing so far is architectural lighting, nothing dynamic at this point.

^Which is what the color washes would be used for. More likely for coloring the ground but also the buildings as well. The Source 4s would be for making shapes on the ground/buildings. For as small as the lighting towers are (from what I have seen so far), I don't think any kind of moving fixtures will be placed on them. That doesn't mean they are not going to install beefier truss that will hold moving fixtures though, which I am guessing they will do in other parts of the midway.

I'm pretty sure from what they showed us that they will use automated lighting, as it was described as similar to what is on the games midway (HES Studio Colors? I forget).

actually gobo's have nothing to do with a specific type of light outside of needing an ERS Fixture. A gobo is a piece of metal with a pattern cut into it, or a dichroic glass disc with a color image on it, any ellipsoidal reflector spotlights can have them inserted to give you a pattern/projection.

99er's right you especially see those COLORados ALL over the place. they get a bad name and wrap because of the assumed quality of dj gear in relation to this type of work, but parks, permanent installs, theatres... if a place has LED lights, there's at least a good chance colorado's will show up somewhere in the mix.
