Launches for a TTD made of Knex

Spelling hydrualocs wrong is just plane rediculous.
If some people still cant get it right just copy and paste it from someone who DID spell it right. After seeing it on this forum so long it's amazing that some people still cant get even remotely close to spelling "hydraulics" right.

The topic I started about this

The Wicked Twister launch topic

Let me just say that I totally gave up on launching K'NEX and went back to using the ole' chain lift.

Edit: The Wicked Twister link is to one that was from a while back.

If you want a cable lift all you have to do is tie some string to a couple links of chain and make two cylinders. One cylinder to pull it up and one pull it back. You'll need to make a space that the sled can go into at the end of the lift.

If you're getting it as a gift what difference doesn it make?

I have one, and I saved up my lunch money for it. I enjoy it.

DELETED! What time does the water show start?

come on guy. its simple. you can avoid the use of electronics and expensive motors.

You will need a couple things.

First, you will need to attach a little hook onto the front of the first cart you have.

Second, build a tower that is just a bit taller than your run up to the top hat is long. build it a bit behind the part of the top hat that the train goes up. Next, fine a few pound weight. Not too heavy, not too light. You dont watnt he train pulling 20 acceleration g's or something. Attach a string to it, with a pulley at the top of the tower. You can always devise a locking mechanism to keep the weight up when you want it, or you can even use a chain system to bring the weight up and down. Put a pulley just a bit below the track level (of the run up) and run the string from the weight, to the top pulley, to the bottom pulley, and have a little loop aroudn the end. you may even want to change it a bit so that the string goes all the way back to the weight in a constant loop so that the string doesnt come all the way out, and have a small loop at a spot so that the hook on the front/bottom of the train can hook into it. Otherwise I would reccoment having a knex or other piece tied within the string so it cant pass past the pulley on the bottom

As for release mechanism, you can probably rig it with the right angle on the hook so right when the train starts the incline, the string just slips off the hook, or you can always make a little block on the side of the track that will tap a part of the train when it goes by, which you can attach to the hook so that when it hits the hook will tilt parallel to the track and the string would come off more easily.

I think the best angle of a hook type mechanism on the cart would be with a very short hook, pointing straight down. Youl have to fool around with the weights to make sure there isnt too much so that it doesnt just pull the train and stop it if the hook doesnt come undone.

i think this method will give you more realistic acceleration, you can change the weight and get more speed, or you can even rig it so that the weight is just enough to get it over most of the time, but fail occasionally.

post results if you use my method. good luck.

well becuase of the price it is all i asked for, will i be happy with that only for a gift? i mean is it fun, i am turing 15 so as a 15 year old is it still as cool??

CAN YOU BUY MORE TRACK ANYWHERE???

Hey, has anyone tried using magnets for breaks if so, how has it worked?

***My Goal: Ride Top Thrill Dragster 1K times by 2014!***

One magnet on train one on track, I am going to try with a couple of hard drive magnets because they are very small and one can pick up a piece of metal 6 inches away. Pop open your computer, and steal them from there. ;)

if you are going to try to have breaks using magnets, your going to need to do a lot of experimenting. first of all, you obviously cant change the current and use electromagnets to get constant desceleration. most magnets will accelerate the train, then descelerate the train, or do the opposite. it will most likely come out of a magnet run at approximately the same speed it goes in because no matter what, in front of the magnet will = acceleration, behind will = desceleration, or vice verca. they are about equal.
Gotta love the good ole physics. ;)
