Jumbo Jet coaster

While looking at a roller coaster book, i noticed a picture of a roller coaster called Jumbo Jet. It was around in the 1970's at Cedar Point. Where in the park was this ride located, and why did they remove it?

Jumbo Jet opened in 1972 (the year I graduated from high school) and was located near the current location of Disaster Transport.

It was similar to SFGAm's Whizzer. You sat one person behind the other on a long seat, and it was one of my favorite coasters at the time, second only to Blue Streak.

I believe it was a maintenance nightmare, so was removed.

It was INTENSE. Once you went over the top it didn't let up until it hit the brakes. Yes it was a ride mechanic's nightmare. Like I have pointed out before, all of the Schwarzkopf rides of that era came only with service manuals in technical German. Had to send them to a firm in Cleveland , where an engineer from Germany translated them. It also liked walking away. It sat on blocks of wood and would have to periodically "inched" back into postion. It was showing signs of being a trouble making as early as 1974. I will not go into details, other there were some "incidents."

Did Schwarzkopf also create Matterhorn at Disneyland? I noticed the trains (especially the way you sit, in a single row) to be very similar to how Jumbo Jet's were.

The Amazement Park

Matterhorn was built by Arrow Developement in conjunction with Disney. The bobsled style cars were/are common on European portable coasters.

Yes I thaught it was where DT is now. By looking at the picture, it looks like it was a pretty cool ride.

The Jumbo Jet is my first memory of Cedar Point. As a little kid I remember my dad being scared to death to ride it. He finally worked up enough courage to ride it, but while waiting in line it broke down. When the maintenance guys came with their crow bars to manually ratchet the cars up the hill that was the end of that - he bailed. Funny thing is now he can ride anything without any fear.

I'd been wondering lately...

How did the spiral lift work?

Each car had a gear motor that engaged a rack in the track. It received it's power from a pair of contact rails. It worked fine, whenit was new. As they wore in there was usually a shower of sparks beneath the trains, both from the pickups, and from the motor brushes. It used high voltage DC, like the Giant Wheel.

If you get a chance to go to Six Flags Great America north of Chicago, you can ride The Whizzer, which has a similar lift mechanism. It's a really fun ride. Glad they're keeping up on it.

They were gonna get rid of whizzer for Superman. When that news got out, the public went nuts. Two months later they changed their minds and removed shockwave instead.

Tig'rr at Indiana Beach is somewhat similar to the Jumbo Jet. The first drop and curve are very similar.

I think it's safe to assume that was a publicicity stunt. I doubt Whizzer was ever going anywhere.

It also says that it was moved to La Feria in Mexico City. However i have never heard of this park. Does this park still exist and if so does the Jumbo Jet ?

Check out where it says Past roller coasters. Looks like Jumbo Jet has departed from that park.

*Edit: I guess it does still exist at a park in Mexico. http://www.rcdb.com/id1867.htm

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Thanks bud.

rcdb is an awesome website. I love looking at other parks in other areas of the world to see what they are like. My all time favorite park that you should all check out is called Esselworld in India. They have a website called esselworld.com . The reason I like it is because of the opening movie they have. The music is pretty good too, but if you ever need a good laugh, just watch the video and listen to the music and you'll get a kick out of it.

Wait while loading... Wait while loading... Wait while loading...

I hope Esselworld is not paying for extra bandwidth.

I know it takes a little bit to load, but it is worth the wait. Hopefully you stuck it out long enough to see the opening movie.
