CEDAR POINT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO DEBUT NEW THRILL RIDE,VERTIGO TO OPEN THIS SUMMER IN CHALLENGE PARK

Will this ride open this summer? From what I read it is supposed too,I am just wondering why so late in the season to open it? and the biggest question I wonder is:Is this going to be the newest attraction for CP for 2002?or are they going to be adding a new roller coaster for 2002?I hope they will add a roller coaster.any comments?

Cedar Point.....HOLD ON!!
Well, from what I've heard, Cedar Point plans to open it by August 1st of this year (Yes, in time for my August 9th trip!). I read an article where Dick Kinzel said "I saw this ride at the S&S booth during the IAPPA show, and I knew Cedar Point needed one, but I couldn't wait untill the 2002 season to have it installed. I told them I wanted it this year." or something to that effect.

Hope that helps :)

Yes, it will be open within 2 weeks.

I doubt this is an attraction that will be billed for next season -- why? It's built in 2001, opened in 2001 (very shortly), and will be making money in 2001, therefore it's an attraction for 2001. I think that part of the decision to build it now and debut it so late in the season may be to help draw guests to the park for the later part of the season, especially the end of August and September, when the crowds really tend to drop off. Also, it seems fairly easy to build, not taking months upon months as a new coaster would, so why not put it up now? The earlier the better, the more profit it will make in the long run.

Actually, (and remember I have no idea if I'm close or way off) building the VertiGo now makes total sense using CrystalKat's logic. Especially if they're building a wooden coaster for next year (Which I'm hoping for although I might not get to visit the point in 2002.) If Kinzel & Co. figure they can't top the Force and decide to build a nice wooden coaster then they can use a two prong attack of VertiGo and Unnamed Wooden coaster in their marketing. And with VertiGo running it may help CP get quicker ROI on the new coaster allowing them to do something bigger in 2004. Just a thought.
Why build VertiGo now? Construction costs. Why would you spend the money to have two different construction companies building two different rides when you could build one now, and one later.

ddogg,

They use the same companies to build VertiGo as they will/would use for a coaster. Same concrete contractors have done all the work for the past 12 years. ALL Erection and Crane Rental has done all the steel raising in the park since Corkscrew in '76. General Contractor has been the same for every project in the last 18 years if I recall..

They DO bring in a few new peopel for special stuff (Tri-State did part of MF if I remember).. but generally stick with the same people..
