I had a couple bad experiences on the Turnpike so I was looking at a map and noticed if I go from Canton (where I live) and take 30 to Wooster and then hit 250 it will, of course, go right up to Sandusky.
Is it safe? After all the Route 2 incidents I have read about and my Turnpike experiences, driving to Sandusky scares me.
I know there is supposed to be a way to take Route 224 I have heard but not too sure.
Please advise.
route 2 is not any more dangerous than other highways in Ohio, bad drivers and weather cause accidents, even roads that are not deteriating(as anyone that has driven I-94 can imagine) are not particularly unsafe, your chances of an accident will be the same any route, just buckle up and drive safely
The dangerous part of Rt. 2 is west of Sandusky. It's 4 lanes east of Sandusky, where you'd be using it. I'd feel a lot safer on the 6-lane Turnpike or the 4 lane Rt. 2 than I would on the 2-lane Rt. 250 all the way from Wooster. But different drivers prefer different types of routes.
Take a look at our directions page for a route that would limit your time on the Turnpike. (It's also the quickest route from Canton.)

Thanks for the advice Walt. Is route 250 2 lanes the whole way from Wooster? I cannot find any information on that highway anywhere on the internet.
If it IS only a two laner then I would not like it either.
It just seems the Ohio Turnpike has become crazy and it seems the craziest drives have blue plates, lol.
I took the turnpike from GL last year and hated it. It's not just we "blue plates" from MI that are crazy. It seemed that most people were driving 10-20 MPH faster on the turnpike than they do on route 2 (I live in Canton, MI). People were weaving in and out of traffic, cutting people off, and riding bumpers.
Frankly, I prefer taking eastbound route 2 from 280, even if it's two lanes for a period of time.
I'd rather die living than live like I'm dead
I just don't understand how these people get away with doing over 100 on the Turnpike.
If I tried it I would be the first one to get a ticket or my car impounded. Thankfully I am just not that stupid to pull that.
I don't know why, but I do have a very bad feeling about the Turnpike this summer.
Since they have allowed semis to go faster it seems there have been more serious accidents involving semis.
This goes against all the truckers who said letting them keep up with the other traffic would be more safe.
Someone needs to do something to make the Turnpike safer. It's a shame it is going to take many more fatal accidents before they even begin to think about it.
I believe that 250 intersects 224 as well, so if you wanted to take 224, it would just be 77N to 224W, and then on that until right around Ruggles, I think, and that's where you'd turn North on 250. I don't think that this way is very advantageous for you, though. I assume that 250 is mostly (if not all) 2 lane from 224 North. However, I am not completely sure. From personal experience, there's not a better way to get there than the way described on this site, as Walt said. The other option to avoid the turnpike is to go up to Cleveland and hop on 90W until and hit Route 2 from there. Also, if you come on either the turnpike or Route 2, you can take the Rye Beach Rd. Exit and take the Chausee, which is so much more fun than the causeway, in my opinion.

The Chausee is the only other way to get on Point (other than th Causeway).

Is that the long road that goes right along the lake and you pass all those nice homes there?
I ended up going that way one day and I wondered if I was ever going to get anywhere, lol.
Wish I could afford to live on THAT street.
When I took it I don't remember where I came out at.
How exactly do you hit the Chausee?

30 takes you forever out of the way at slow speeds. I think even from Canton you're better off going up 77 to the turnpike, exiting at 57 and jogging up to 2. Get off at Rye Beach Rd., follow the signs.

Thank you. I am going to write this down because I will never remember.
I do recall 30 is slow near the Amish restaurants out that way (Wooster).
I don't like the Turnpike after last year but I guess there really isn't a better alternative.
You just stay on 57 and it runs smack dab into Route 2?

I'll also suggest taking the turnpike to the Lorain/Elyria exit and taking Rt. 57 north to Rt. 2.
Do NOT take the turnpike all the way to 250 in Sandusky. The two minutes it takes to go from the turnpike to Rt. 2 in Elyria will save you 20-30 minutes compared to taking 250 from the turnpike.
Avoid 30 at all costs. 250 will also drive you crazy. 77 to the turnpike is indeed the quickest route from Canton. I speak from personal experience.

The directions Jeff gave are the exact way my wife and I have taken the past few years. It seems to be the quickest and simplest way to get there. What stinks is, Canton is about our halfway point.
250 can be a pain in the butt. It's like speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down, watch out for that horse and buggy, great, there's a tractor trailor in front of us.

I personally like the turnpike...more lanes and higher speed limit. That's just my opinion though. I think it's safer also.
