Intro to Coasters: Help please

I am trying to plan 2-3 days at the point with my stick in the mud little sister. She has never ridden any coaster that I am aware of. I am trying to change this. She is 15 by the way and easily hits all height requirements.

I was wondering what a good order would be. First we are starting with a day of water rides (a couple of these have big drops) and Soak City where I am going to get her on some of the bigger slides. What I am thinking is that we should then hit some coasters that night. For the first day I was thinking Mine Ride, Disaster Transport, Iron Dragon, and Wild Cat. I think Blue Streak may be too much depending on how the others go... Anyway, by late in day 2 I am hoping to hit at least gemini and mean streak. It may be too much to hope for much else, although I would love to see her on everything.

Any thoughts you have or personal experiences you could relay would be helpful.

Your plan sounds good for "working up" to larger coasters.

On the other hand...you could tell her that if she manages a big one first (Magnum or MF), everything else will seem "small"...she just needs to get beyond her initial fear.

It was a boyfriend who actually got ME on rollercoasters again.

This cured my phobia: Blue Streak, DT, ID, Wildcat, Mine Ride, Gemini, MS, Magnum, then MF, all done by dusk in one day. And inversion could have come easily after Millenium

Mine Rides 03: 1

My coaster disliking hubby actually really likes Raptor--he hates heights and the first hill twists before it dives, which takes away the free-fall feeling. (The lack of a car might freak her out at first, though.) I'd save it for later on day 2, though, and start with what you had planned. That's how I start hubby the first time we go up together each season.

Awww, bad day? Take a different perspective on things. Try upside down, a barrel roll, a cobra roll or a corkscrew. Life can't be all that bad when your feet are over your head!

A good list for working up to the big 'uns! is:

Mine Ride, Woodstock's Express(I call it Woodstock's Revenge hehe) the Disaster Transport, Iron Draggon, Wildcat, Corkscrew, Bluestreak, Gemeni, Meanstreak(The brake on the hill kills the drop) Mantis, Raptor, Wicked Twister, Magnum, Millennium Force then Top Thrill Dragster.

Should be a coaster rider by the end of day one. most of those can be done before 5, the last 6 could have you waiting a bit. And your final ride of your trip should be Demon Drop, usually no wait little scarry and really really fun!

trips to CP:3 Dragster:1 MFer:4 Magnum: 8 doesn't get any better then a nice day in may!

I started out on the Blue Streak, Disaster Transport and some of the other smaller coasters there...and if anything, it kept me from going on the larger ones. I thought Gemini was going to be the tallest one I'd ever ride that didn't have shoulder harnesses. But then one year, I started the day on Mantis, went to Power Tower, Gemini, water rides, then Mean Streak. After Mean Streak, we walked straight to Magnum--was I a little scared.. Hell yeah, half way down the hill I had my hands in the air and was having a great time. (Note: this was before Millenium Force) I think that if I went on Magnum first, before the other coasters, I wouldn't have wasted so many trips to CP only to stand outside the exit.

I think that the way a person is introduced to coasters depends on who the person is. Perhaps if you asked her which way she'd prefer, it might help both of you enjoy your day.

Metallica, Magnum and Mountain Dew, and finally turning 21...what could be better?

Thanks for all the help so far. I am going to go with the easing in method just because I am afraid that if we rode, say Maggie first, she would be terrified and I'd never get her on anything else. Also, in response to theone001, I will not take her on Demon Drop, I don't ever do that ride myself. I hate how it whacks your head at the very end.

Oh, by the way, if all goes well I hope to take her to Timbersfest the following weekend.

Please also be aware that if she is terrified to the point of tears she cannot enter a train. I'm not saying YOU are this type of person, but some think it's cool to force ppl on rides when they don't want to go so badly they cry. A ride host is instructed to not let these people ride, and the ride will be delayed as they have to release all harnesses and recheck the whole train... in short; don't force it. If she doesn't want to go, then leave it be, but don't let that ruin YOUR day(s)
Take her on a medium-size coaster like Gemini. Then she might want to ride something bigger, and the smaller rides won't be so scary. Also, she might like the idea of a racing coaster.

Dragster 1 time.
Millennium Force 27 times.
Wicked Twister 6 times.
Magnum over 100 times...
Where would we be without CP?:)

hey mr. miller...you know you really should be grading papers instead of asking for advice about your sister that you could just get from me or jenn...why dont you let us take your sister to c.p.? oh wait...herman is going to be there!! LOL well anyways you have the right idea just dont force her on anything and just let her pick what she wants to ride first...that way she'll feel more comfortable!!!!

I never did think to come back and tell you how things went. I tried the slow build up method and it worked... except we built up really fast. We were on Maggie by the end of day 1. Did Millenium force first thing on day 2. Hit Timbersfest on the weekend and came back to reride just about everything at Cedar Point. Unfortunately, we didn't get to ride Dragster and she wouldn't go upside down so we had to skip Raptor and Corkscrew. But, overall it worked very well.
Very cool! Glad you came back to give the update. Work on the upside down rides later!

That's funny how different people take it in different ways. My oldest is scared to death of heights. He's 9, now. And, he was scared to go upside down. But what do you suppose were the first two coasters he wanted to ride were? In this order: Corkscrew(middle), again(in the front), Gemini(by this time, it was all front seaters as he is now hooked), Mean Streak, CCMR, Iron Dragon, Wicked Twister, Raptor, and finally Blue Streak. It got too late to do Maggie & Mantis, so we went back the next day. Hit all those rides in pretty much that order. We were gonna ride MF, but he said the line was too long. I think he chickened out, personally. But, we did get a ride on Maggie, right before closing. Interestingly enough, it was my first night ride on Maggie. What a rush! It's totlly different at night.

In the immortal words of Socrates, "I drank what?!"

Until last year I was totally freaked out about roller coasters, but something about them amazed me. So, I started out by going on the Gemini to get used to the big drops. Then the Corkscrew to get used to going up-side down. From there I jumped right up to Millennium Force. After that I could ride anything.

Definetly go with Iron Dragon first. The OTSR will make her feel content.

The more holding her in the safer she will feel. My sister is the same way, she hated CCMR hated ID on the first ride then loved the next 4 rides on it in a row.

Then, the next year, she got on Disaster Transport and has liked it but not as well as ID.

Then, the next year, (this last year) she got on Wildcat but didn't like it very well. I think it was because of the quick drops and the small restraints, small for her.

This year, at the end of the month, she has already talked about wanting to finally getting on the Gemini, and also wants to shoot up on the power tower. :) I big step for her.

Hope everything goes well and she comes around much faster.
