Intensity of Maverick

I'm a pb posting newbie but have been reading here for a while... I didn't see any other thread on this topic, so I hope it's not redundant.

Despite having been to CP twice this season, I've yet to make it on Maverick, because both trips occured before it opened. This coming weekend, I'm going with my (not so) little brother, and my two young cousins. The brother I'm not worried about -- he's a sturdy 20-something -- but the cousins I am.

The two words I keep reading to describe Maverick are fun (right on!) and 'intense.' So, here's my concern.

The aforementioned cousins are 9 & 10, and live in South Florida. Read: not from a roller coaster mecca, as we are fortunate to be in Ohio. To the best of my knowledge, they've only ever been on one rollercoaster (Dania Beach Hurricane.) It's a woodie, about 100ft high, pretty good for a random isolated roller coaster, but still not a CP-intensity ride. Now, they LOVE this coaster and will ride it 20 times in a row; they can outride me on it and that's saying something. But it's still the only coaster they've ever ridden, and so I'm a bit wary of how they'll tolerate anything else.

So my question is this. In 'intensity,' is this something that I'm going to put them on first thing in the morning, and scare the crap out of them? I'm a ride anything type of girl, but having never ridden this one before, I guess I just want to verify that it's appropriate for them... so as not to get in an awesome AM ride on Maverick and spend the next 12 hours riding the train and Jr Gemini because I've scarred them for life, LOL.

Thanks to any help anyone can provide. :)

I guess it really depends on the kid. Maverick isn't intimidating in height, but it has the speed. I guess if you show your cousins the ride and explain what it does then let them decide. Let them know that there are quick turns taken at fairly high speeds along with inversions. I saw kids on it when I was there and they seemed to love it. Sure it's intense, but it isn't too intense for kids by any means. Hopefully they like it as much as I did.

Thanks, Vince. That was kind of my gut. Looking on the website, the only thing that seemed to freak them out was the height of MF, for the younger one. I'm not concerned about the height of Maverick, or the inversions, mostly just if it was going to be too much in experience. It's good to know that other kids were enjoying it.

Your response is much appreciated. :)

I haven't even been on Maverick yet, but might I suggest having them watch the POV videos of the coasters on cedarpoint.com? It sounds like you have already been doing that to an extent, but it seems like those videos can be a pretty good gauge for whether or not you are going to be able to handle it. Obviously you'd also want to view it once you got there too.

Hope you have a fun trip!

How did the kids react when they first went on the woodie? Were they eager to crest the hill, or begging to be taken off?

Maverick's got some intense moments, but they're all taken in the spirit of fun. The fun factor outweighs everything else on Maverick, IMO. It's 'intense' moments aren't intimidating in any way, they're just enough to get the excitement kicked up another notch. It'd definetley be a great starter in the morning, I'd be on cloud nine the rest of the day starting out with Maverick and then experiencing everything else CP has to offer. I say get that over with in the morning, and come back for a night ride, too. Have fun!

My 8 year old loves Maverick. He's a coaster nut though. If you are not sure about your cousins it might be a good idea to work the up to Maverick. start with Blue Streak or Iron Dragon. If they are OK with those try Corkscrew to see how they handle going upside down and see how the react. I f they like Corkscrew head for Maverick.

My 10 year old loves Maverick!!! He has it ranked with MF for his #1 LOL Like the other posters mentioned, it is intense, but nothing that isn't fun. I say go for it! They will love it!

I SAY GO FOR IT TOO! the drop is nothing and the kids will love the tunnel. I get first time riders on it all the time!

I'd say go for it too. Last week, there were three younger girls (maybe 11-12) waiting in line around me. One of them was really scared, but her friends convinced her to ride. Halfway through the ride I could hear her laughing and giggling and having fun. When we got to the brake, she was screaming she wanted to ride it again.

I agree with everyone else. Maverick is a very fun ride, not nearly as scary as say Millennium Force or Top Thrill Dragster. It is one of those coasters where you can laugh and have a great time. With a lot of airtime!!

Awesome, thank you all. I really want to get there at open and start the morning with Maverick, mostly because I hate lines (although, who doesn't) and I find my tolerance of them is just not what it used to be. If it wasn't for that factor, I'd definitely work up to it, as I plan to for MF/TTD (if they ride those at all.)

As long as they don't show any hesitation in looking online, in discussion or upon watching it run, I think we'll go ahead. I've been told they've been spending lots of time on the website (I won't actually be with them 'till Friday night to know myself,) and getting pretty jazzed up, so I'm guessing they're already familiar with it.

CedarPointLover -- I honestly don't know. Since they live so far away, I don't see them often, but when I went to see them last summer and asked what they'd like to do as their special treat night, they both begged to do the coaster. I got the impression that they'd never been concerned about it when my aunt and I discussed it at that time.

Thanks again to all! :)

maverick makes millennium look like a wimp. It's WAY more intense... yet for some reason my girlfriends little sister who won't get on mine ride loves it.

Demon Drop 2004
Castaway Bay Lifeguard 04-05

It is a great ride but for little kids the whiplash is very rough. I was very surprised on how quick the turns were and at some points i found it too rough.

That was the only reason it is number 2 on my list.

I hate to say it but I declared saturday, after 2 night rides, that Maverick beat the sh....poop out of night riding on Millennium, Dragster and Magnum combined! That coaster is insane at night!!!

if they do decide to ride it, they should follow the "head back, holding on" speil. Makes the turns alot less jarring.

My first ever ride on Maverick was at night. I rode 4 times in a row that night and loved them all. When I rode the next morning during the day it was so different. Night ride's on Maverick rock.

Hurray! Post 299,000 on PointBuzz!
