Inexpensive place to stay in Sandusky

I'm curious where the budget conscious among us stay when they go on over-night trips to Cedar Point?

I've been staying at the KoA in one of their mini cabins on my early early and late season trips. Hard to beat their location and at $50 a night it seemed to beat most of the motels around. Does anyone know of somewhere else to stay that's a similar or better value?

Rather than staying in Sandusky, on the rare occasions that I've stayed in the area, I have sometimes been able to get much better rates by driving not very far down the road. Be sure to check out your options in nearby places such as Milan, Huron, even Vermillion. You may find that a 20 minute drive may yield significant savings.

Note also that room rates vary wildly. The same room that you can get on Thursday night for $50 will cost you $200 on Saturday.

Good points! Unfortunately because of my work schedule I end up coming on the weekends and the few times I've checked around other hotels I found the high rates. I'll definitely take your advice and check in the nearby towns for better rates.

I prefer to stay in my camper. It's cheap. If you go in the summer and have tents or could buy tents, then staying in a tent is cheap. And camping is fun also.

Yeah, the summertime trips are either in my pop-up camper or a tent, still at the KoA. I like the cabins on the early and late trips because I can bring a portable electric heater and the cabin stays nice and toasty.

Trying to plan my first trip of the year for May 16th, but I'm to much of a sissy to camp in the temps I'll see then! Plus at a little over 5 hour drive and then setting up a camper (or tent) for a three day trip is a pain.

Where do you camp? I'm just trying to figure out if there is anywhere that's better than the KoA, but honestly it's been great to stay at the past couple years.

Only place near Cedar Point we've camped is East Harbor State Park. It has been a few years. It is a very nice park. Facilities were very nice. We got used to staying in Camper Village in the old circle for $70 a night. Beats the 20 minute drive back and forth. Less of a hassle for diner. Which usually is steak, baked potato, and corn on the cob. For about the cost of a cheeseburger in the park. Now staying in our camper is over $100 a night. If we have guests with us we'll stay at the park so they can save on tickets, get early entry, and refunded for their parking. But when we go by ourselves I think we'll stay at East Harbor and just eat at Famous Dave's.

My pop up has heat and air conditioning. Heated mattresses. Makes the early May camping pretty comfortable as with closing weekend in late October. Still wondering if you can get away with putting 2 pop ups on one RV site is allowable. I saw someone set up on a prior visit with a RV and a pop up on one pull through site. I just haven't bothered to call up and ask if it's ok. Guess I'd have to find a second party with a pop up that would be interested before it is worth the phone call.

I've stayed at Camp Sandusky before. Similar to KoA cabins. They offer a pancake breakfast for a few bucks, they have a bunny farm, a pool, and there is a McDs across the street. I've also looked into Camp Crystal Rock; they have a group bonfire and wood fired brock oven pizzas, no pool though. But Camp Crystal Rock seems a bit too close to Camp Crystal Lake for my tastes...
