I personally don't see why it matters whether they announce it tomorrow or January.

I'd rather die living than live like I'm dead
I believe OldCPer is right about most of the General Public not knowing a new ride is being constructed. Not that this was scientific in any way, but I asked about 30 people at work if they heard about the new ride, and all asked me to describe what I knew as they knew nothing. (Of those 30, 2 expected a new ride in the Cedar Point tradition of something new every year.)
But the whole point of the park is getting revenue from the General Public. Remember years ago when Cedar Point would run ads on TV just before the season would end with the child sitting on the sled, having absolutely no fun? It was an attempt to get last-minute visits from people before the season was over.
I think something similar would be backing an announcement in January. It's the mid-west: there will be snow, ice, wind, cold weather around... most of us will miss the days of summer, and wish we could somehow get through winter a bit faster. This is perfect timing for Cedar Point. With most people "depressed about winter" so to speak, they'll announce the latest scream machine at the park to an audience eager to get into summer. With opening day 4 months down the road, people will begin making plans to visit the park to ride the latest thing.
If it were announced now, it wouldn't have as much impact on those same people. We just left the 2002 season and have had our fun for the year (well, the general public has, anyway). No one's concerned about vacation plans for mid-2003. They're focused on now. Right now they're concentrating on Thanksgiving and Christmas: buy gifts, make holiday plans, figure out a way to not gain 10 pounds from eating turkey and ham and etc.
Of course, I could be way off in my guess or analysis of this... I'm guessing like everyone else. Just remember, when trying to figure out Cedar Point's moves in anything they do, it's about getting revenue, and the majority of that doesn't come from the enthusiasts... it comes from the General Public. Hence, everything revolves around them.

I want to add on to part of what you said. People are thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas. What better gift than a season pass to Cedar Point, where they are building what might be the biggest ride on the planet?
I don't have any reason to think it will be announced before or after the holidays but I can't think of a good reason why they wouldn't do it BEFORE and push the season passes for gifts. It seems like it would be a missed opportunity.
I just got off the phone with Season Pass office. During quick causual conversation, she said "Probably will hear an announcement in after the first of the year...."
Scripted response to the question? Hmmmm.....

I didnt doubt an announcment in january....i doubt that CP was waiting for SFMM to announce their coaster.
I very well think the announcment will come around that time.

I think this is an air-compression launch coaster in Japan, which has the fastest acceleration (of a roller coaster or anything else that I can think of!) and top speed, reaching 106.7 mph in 1.8 seconds. I'm not sure of the ride's name--if any of this is misinformation, someone please correct me.
...wanting DESPERATELY to go to Japan....

That would be Dodonpa. Not sure if I spelled that right though. You got the stats pretty much right. It was S&S's 2nd thrust air coaster.
