I-280

Does anyone know if I-280 is still closed? We took a trip to Cedar Point last year, and it was completly shut down.

I just traveled to Windsor from Cleveland a week or two ago, and while the construction is no where near completed on the bridges themselves, they do have 'makeshift' roadways underneath at the base of the bridges structures that weave in and out of the ground level of where the bridges will be. There are a LOT of delays in the area I'm guessing because although I was lucky, and was not stuck in any myself, the opposite direction from which I was traveling there in back was at a standstill. I made it through relatively quickly, but really be careful driving through there. It is quite curvacious.

I live in Toledo, and there are two lanes open both ways that are from the old road. Traffic is usually ok, but it is a bit squirrly. I think the new bridge is slated to be open sometime in June, but not exactly sure.

Yeah, the new bridge was almost done. The roadway underneath was open in February when I was through there.

The road has been open since November. The new bridge is scheduled to open in June.

It'll be great to see that bridge complete. If it wasn't for the long delay after the tragic accident in 2004 it would have been done by now.

What was the tragic accident? I remember the first time I went to CP in 2003 they were working on it. When did construction start?

If you are looking for a good detour from the Detroit area, take I-75 to the turnpike to the 250 exit. It has worked great for us the past two years.

I believe the tragic accident was that a crane, or part of a crane from above fell onto a truck with workers inside...or at least that was a accident that occurred...anyone want to clarify?

A crane did collapse at the site and I believe one was killed in that accident. I am from Bowling Green so it was on the news here as well.

The problem with getting off the turnpike at 250 when heading to CP from the Toledo area is that you end up about 20-30 minutes southeast of where you want to be when you get off the turnpike. The better option is getting off the turnpike at exit 110 (Rt. 4) and take Rt. 4 into Sandusky.

I don't think the crane fell onto a truck, I think most if not all of the deaths/injuries came from workers falling off the crane as it collapsed. You can read about it here.

Hmm... For some reason I had thought that 250 was the best way in from the turnpike when heading East. Does anyone know if the traffic is any better/worse on 250 or 4?

Traffic would be better on 4. Less advertised route.

Traffic on 4 is like night and day compared to 250 on summer weekends. Just keep it as our secret though, Ok? :)

I agree with taking 4 too. Due to were we live in Toledo, we take 75 to turnpike to Rt 4. It is a lot less traffic, and 250 does take you out of the way a little. The only time we go 250 is to Kalahari. The only time we take 280 is if we take my daughter to my mom's. Turnpike is what we take a majority of the time and not RT 2.

Update;

I was just in Sandusky yesterday, I took 96 from Lansing to 275-75-280-2-250. Had some traffic on 275 because M-10 is shut down and a bit of construction (3 lanes down to 2 lanes) just north of 75 (southbound 275 only). 280 was open (still 35mph) sailed through nicely. Edison Bridge is still down to one lane, outside of that no problems.

^Next time get off 2 at Route 4 and go through town. Not only is there less traffic but less miles then going all the way out to 250 just to angle back towards CP.

I've only been through downtown Sandusky (not counting Rt. 250) once, a few years ago...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you followed Rt. 4 all the way down to the lake and turn right, you'd hit the Causeway between Breakers Express and the Point? That's the only traffic light I remember past the huge sign.
