How can LIMs malfunction?

I wonder if you can have LIMs that propel you up the hill in their normal function and then if they fail, they turn into brakes? That would be totally cool. Then, you only need to have things down the center of the track because they perform both functions.

Well, WT has the E-brakes on the inside, clamping onto the fins (at least, I think those are the E-brakes). http://www.pointpixels.com/4images/details.php?image_id=2645 Something has occured to me, though. The track that are supposedly for LIMs have no gaps or holes in the middle large enough to pass electrical conduit through to the motors. You can see on the right side of the WT image that the LIM mounting plate stops before the large nut for just that reason. All the pieces we've seen simply have two rows of bolt holes running down the center.

I don't think those are e-brakes. Those are the friction brakes that stop the ride at the end of the ride. Then again, I guess they could double function as e-brakes. hmmmmm.

I am guessing. I'm sure there's someone here who knows, though. (Dave?)

WT doesn't have friction brakes. :)

seriously? grrrrr......i thought though were friction brakes. oh well. I think Intamin should publish manuals for their coasters so we can memorize how they all work!! :)

If a 1000 ft. freighter landed on top of them I'm sure they would malfunction.

I've never been to Cedar Point, but I hear it's nothing special.

I wish a 1000 ft. freighter would land on you.

Don't worry, it looks like all the topics are closing up shop for the night so I'm going to leave now anyway. Goodnight!

So what are those, e x i t ?

I believe they are rare earth magnets. :) Right exit?

Yes, they're magnetic brakes. They cost a lot of money. :)

Well, whatever they are, my real point was about the mounting plates. They need to get electrical, and probably blower motors to the LIMs!

Is it just me, or does WT not need E-Brakes? It kinda just goes up and down a few times and cannot run into another train ;)

Actually, I had an E-stop on Steel Venom this summer. Apparently, somone's shoe flew off and landed in the net over the go-karts. That thing stops hard!
And exit, umm, yeah. I just looked at that picture some more and noticed the ram for the pneumatic cylinder at the top, for retracting the magnetic brake. duh. Stupid of me for not noticing that.

It's OK, every one is allowed one mistake a week. :)

But what about them LIM mounting plates, eh? Any ideas?

^ No ;)
