My girlfriend and I are looking to plan a trip to Kings Island summer 2013. It seems like all of the hotels on the KI website have a minimum check in age of 21. We will both only be 19 at the time. Are there any hotels in a "safe" area within 20-30 minutes of the park that we would be able to check in to?
I have no idea how anybody on here would have the answer to that question, unless they have done so themselves under age 21.
There are a ton of hotels down at the next exit south, Fields-Ertel rd and Mason-Montgomery (why do all the roads in southern ohio have two names??)
You might have better luck with this question on kicentral.com
I'm also staying overnight at a hotel and then spending the day at Kings Island sometime next summer, but I have no clue about the whole under 21 thing. Like MaverickLaunch said, you should ask on kicentral.com.

I stayed at a Super 8 somewhere near Kings Island a few years back before I was 21. I also stayed at the Super 8 in Sandusky a few times before I was 21. I couldn't tell you exactly the location of the one near Kings Island but it was pretty close.

I went to King's Island twice this past summer and stayed at the Super 8 Mason motel. It's right across the highway from King's Island and is only a few minutes drive. You can literally see the park from your room (depending on where they put you.) It's cheap in price and good quality. Good continental breakfast too!
Edit: I'm over the age of 19, but I would assume you would be able to since you're above the age of 18.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!

I have yet to see an area near Kings Island that isn't considered safe. My girlfriend and I stayed at Baymont Inn and Suites in Mason a couple of years ago for a REALLY good price. There's a cool little waterpark right down the drive from it, and you have a cool distant view of KI's Drop Tower and Eiffel Tower too. Bing map "Baymont Inn and Suites Mason Ohio" and check out the area and check out the water park too from the satellite. I would simply call the hotel and explain to them that you're 18 and ask if that's a problem. Might as well do it now so you're not looking all over the place for a Hotel come next summer.
If you call before hand and tell them your situation I've had many hotels let the rule go and let me check in. I'm 19.
