Himalaya and Matterhorn

I thought this photo was very interesting: http://www.guidetothepoint.com/gallery/img.asp?img=h-spacespiral75.jpg

Sure there are differences, but do you think Himalaya and Matterhorn are very similar? I never knew they were neighbors at one time.

Yea neither did I
The Super Himalaya has been in at least 3 different spots maybe 4. I think I saw on a 1972 map{at the Follet House} that the ride was near the Dodgem and the current site of the Goodtime Theater. I personally don't rememeber it there. Through most of the 1970s it was near the Space Spiral then moved to the Gemini midway that moved again in 1999 do to the introduction of Camp Snoopy.

I'm also curious as to what happened to the original props and graphics on Super Himalaya: http://www.virtualmidway.com/popup/ridepopup600.asp?image=superhimalaya7.jpg&title=Super%20Himalaya

Id love to see that theming back. I'm a big fan of the older European themed flat rides. Matterhorn, Schwabinchen, Bayern Curve, Music Express/Himalaya always had a special charm to them thanks to the artwork.

I would guess the younger crowd wouldn't appreciate the old style theming as much.

I noticed the Spelling of Himalaya changed. In that picture it is spelled "Himalaja"

German spelling. The "j" has a "y" sound, as anybody who has shopped at Meijer knows. :)

I guess I should have clearified. I understand the German pronunciation, I just wasn't sure when CP made the spelling change.

I can't understand why both similar flats were right next to each other.

I wish they'd bring that sign back too. I kind of like it. Super Himalaya is completely forgotten about. It doesn't have any sign anywhere saying it's name, except the tiny entrance sign, and it's not on any map due to Power Tower covering it.

I hear ya Brent02, and I also miss it's former location across from Gemini. Camp Snoopy is great for the kids, but it's peaceful appearance before the 1999 season was so nice. I remember seeing one of those wild turkeys near Himalaya when I was in line for it.

I'm such a fan of Bayern Curve. Did cp ever have one in it's history?

Heck yes, Vanessa...Part of the "Million Dollar Midway" unveiled for the 1972 (?) season.

Currently the Iron Dragon Midway...The train station was moved back to it's current location...where the Wildcat is today sat Bayern Curve and Schawbienchen (I don't care if it is spelled right;))...Across the Midway sat Monster and The Western Cruise Station.

Check out the Gallery section of this site and also VirtualMidway.com for phots. (sorry I'm too lazy to find them for you:))

See you on the Midway!

Bayern Curve now that brings back some memories. I loved that ride and was bummed to see it go. I loved that olympic theme it had going on too. Schwabinchen and Bayern Curve used to have the coolest lights at night. Another favorite of mine has to be the Tiki Twirl. Anyone know if those rides exist at any park anywhere?

When I go to Kennywood, I always have to ride the Bayern Curve. I remember riding it for the first time when I was little at the Pavillion at Myrtle Beach. Good times. Thanks for the info guys.

i have a park map from about '75 im guessing, and boy are things different now. speaking of lost rides, remember the super jets next to the blue streak?
Bayern Kurve can still be found at Paramount's Great America in Santa Clara, CA. I loved that ride. Now it would make me ill. Curse my inner ears!

You can actually see some remains for Shwabinchin (sp?) and Bayern Curve right under the Wildcat. There are 2 circles where the concrete was poured creating 2 circular pads. You can also clearly see where the que railing posts were cut off at the surface of the concrete near the ramp of Wildcat. The electrical circuit to one of the original rides still powers the Wildcat. You can see the old rusty J-box where the power connects to Wildcat.

I love the Bayern curve too!
