High winds

Hi,

I see that high winds (~28 mph) are forcasted for tomorrow (Sunday.) How high do the winds usually have to get before CP starts closing rides? I've never been to CP on a very windy day, so I don't know how much wind they will aceept.

Thanks

(Forgive me if this was a repeat post, but I cannot get the search engine to work.)

I'm thinkin it would take alot more to close a ride. It takes a ton of wind to stop a 20 ton train.

I think that those of you expecting something huge and cool will be disappointed. There isn't a single logical reason to pour a footer and enclose it in an ugly wall for six months.

Not as much as you may think, Sparty. And I remember one of the greatest quotes I've ever heard on here, "If someome farts in the wrong direction, Sky Ride will close down." :)

I called CP this morning, and they said that MF and TTD were shut down due to high winds. Was anyone at the park today? Were they down all day?

MF, Magnum, Raptor down all day. Gemini also down.

TTD down part of the day due to winds, off and on due to mechanical/software problems.

The employees were saying that the policy is 30mph winds are the highest allowed at the top before they close on those rides. When we were in line for dragster in the morning they were having trouble getting a car over due to the strong headwind. The employees told the line that winds were in excess of 60 at the top.

They would close rides due to high winds? I guess it makes sense.

Sunday, Magnum, Gemini, Mean Streak, Mine Ride, Millennium Force, Raptor, Sky Ride, and Space Spiral were closed all day because of wind. Wave Swinger should have been closed but wasn't, and Witches Wheel operated for part of the day. Dragster ran about half the day before they shut it down; I suspect that a combination of wind and mechanical difficulties might have been involved with that one. Scrambler also ran more poorly than usual, allegedly because of the wind. Oh, and the waterball was shut off all day. :)

Maureen and I are planning to go tomorrow. Based on the forecast winds plus the data from Sunday, it looks like we don't need to get there for the Joe Cool entrance time...
That must've been some serious wind if Magnum AND Raptor were closed. Normally a still wind off the bay will close Raptor, but Magnum will be fine. Magnum is usually more affected by winds coming off the lake slowing the trains down in the pretzle.

We ran a fewl evenings during '01 when the winds were steadily over 20mph and gusting to about 30mph with the trims off. Winds were coming off the bay though so it was all good. Just have to time the trains and make sure they're coming in okay. We were told not to send empty trains over the lift a few times (last train of the night got to be walked off from the ready brakes and we parked the trains on the lift, station, and readies for the night which was much easier than what we normally have to do at closing time! :)

Yesterday, the difficulty was probably just opening the ride, doing block checks, etc with empty trains. I bet it would have been fine once the trains were loaded.

My husband, myself and a friend of ours did Starlight tickets last night, and had full day tickets for today, but decided to come home and use our day tickets hopefully this upcoming Sunday. We got to ride Mantis, WT, Disaster Transport, Corkscrew, Blue Streak, Iron Dragon, however all the other coasters like everyone else has said were shut down due to the high wind. When we were on Mantis, our train stopped on the lift hill due to a seatbelt, and the wind was HORRID up there. It was nuts. We went back to our hotel room and watched the weather channel and they said there were gusts of 60 mph. Didn't surprise me one bit, seeing how when we were checking into Breakers Express the trash cans in the parking lot were being tipped over and drug across the parking lot by the wind. We didn't want to take our chances and ruin our day tickets on another similiar day, so we just came home (to columbus) and hope to make an early trip next Sunday. Stinks though, we missed out on our ERT, but that's okay. We would have been miserable if we had went today.
Any word on how the wind is affecting the rides today? I'm planning on going tomorrow but I'm not sure if all the rides will be open. The forecast on Weather.com for Sandusky calls for winds of 27 mph at the beginning of the day and 11 at the end; is this for the Point or the mainland, and would this have any effect on what rides will be running? I'll probably call the Point in the morning before I go just to make sure.

I would call just to make sure. Winds were going 20-30 mph yesterday when the rides were closed. They felt ten times worse and I am sure were going faster out on the point. I would call CP before you go. Better to be safe than sorry!
I almost went to park Sunday, but glad I didn't. I figured winds would be bad

Here in Van Wert, we had gusts of up to 51mph!! It wasn't a tornado like we had in November, but the wind still managed to do damage all over town. Luckily,it seems that the storm lost some of its strength by the time it reached CP.

Also if any of the wind gusts reach over 30 mph Rip Cord and Zoom Flume in S.C. must close down.

I just got back from staying at Lighthouse point the past three days and let me tell ya I have never experience winds like they were at CP. At the cottages Sunday and Monday It was almost impossible to shut the door. Sunday night it felt as if you where in a hurricane. Can anyone remember when CP had so many rides down for two straight days?
Hey HORNDOG, I was at Lighthouse Point (in the cottages--#36--next to the pier) Friday thru Monday.

I agree. I have NEVER been in wind like THAT before! And never been to the Point when so many rides closed because of it. Thank God, Friday & Saturday were excellent, weatherwise.

Blasting off in 2 days Can't wait!

The only thing I noticed closed all day today was the Sky Ride. Raptor was closed early, and Magnum had a train parked near the top of the lift. However, it seemed as though by noonish or early afternoon everything was up.
If you saw a Magnum train parked at the top of the lift right before opening, that is normal. It happens every day when the crew transfers on the third train. It also happens when we transfer off a train at night.
