High Winds

I am going to CP for my first time this year tomorrow and was wondering how fast the winds have to be for them to close TTD.

If you got beef then, eat a pork chop.

They closed it last Sunday when winds were recorded 60mph, sustained, at the 200 foot level.

Just wondering , I was at cp today 5/31/03 and the weather was terrible extremely windy and raining , The only coasters running were mf ,corkscrew ,mantis ,wicked twister ,wildcat ,mine ride ......all the others were down ,even after the rain stopped .What is the reason the others cannot operate in these conditions ,other then dragster I wouldnt want to be on that one in any sort of winds !Disaster transport is inside how could the winds affect that one ?power tower was running but demon drop wasnt ,didnt make sence to me , they finally opened demon drop and right as we were boarding it ,one got stuck on top ,and that closed it again

well, the reason that raptor, magnum, mean streek, and gemini were down is because they are really sensitive to wind, raptor and magnum are always the first to go down due to wind, and its because with it being windy, they would either A) not be able to get up the lift (raptor especially) or B) roll back because they wouldn't make it over the second hill. As for power tower being open, really, almost nothing as far as weather shuts that thing down, its the most reliable ride in the park in adverse weather conditions. As far as demon drop, i can't help you there, i'd just be guessing

Disastor Transport has a leaky roof and when it rains too much the water gathers in the trough and the ride cannot operate.

Obviousely you werent there yesterday All were NOT down ! I rode MF 5 x and Mantis twice ,WT 3 x , all the coasters I mentioned in previous post were running and we rode them all .We knew exactly what the weather was gonna be and dressed for the occasion ,my post wasnt a complaint about the others not running , it was a ? as to why they could not run when the others could ,I wasnt disapointed at all We had a great time even with the weather being nasty ,unlike a lot of other people every coaster in the park doesnt have to be running in order to have a good time ! I have been twice in the last month and I havent rode dragster yet, Im not at all disapointed about that because I know It will still be there when I go back again and I will ride It eventually .As to the others who answered my post ,Thanks ! you answered a lot of the ?'s I had .

Well obviousely he wasnt part of the crew yesterday ! And why should I care if he works on the WT anyway , It wasnt like I was lying about it being running yesterday , I was there , I rode It ......and there's no way he was at the park yesterday or he would have known those rides Were Running !

Folks, did it occur to you that he may have meant that all the rides that were down, were down because of the wind?
You are so right jdubya , After pointing that out , it is very well what he was probably saying ,sometimes when you read things you tend to take it the opposite way it was meant to be taken . If this was in fact the case ,I truly appoligize to Matt . It just upsets me when you try and ask an innocent ? about something someone turns it into " you ever think about checking the weather before you go " topic . The ? was about why some coasters run in high winds and others dont . I was fully aware of the weather when I went and was prepared for It, that wasnt the issue .

Coasters generally don't run in high winds because the wind resistance can cause the train to valley. Some rides are more affected by this than others, and sometimes wind direction is important.

Sorry, but wind does not cause problems with trains climbing the lift hill. Raptor is sensitive to wind if it blows in a certain direction and will valley (roll back) if conditions are right. Going up the lift hill is not an issue since it is powered.

Well it is just irritating when guests complain about rides being closed due to weather, when you could have done something as simple as watched the weather before you came and not had to waste your time or money. Trust me people complain about it ALL the time, all it takes is a little common sence

hey mathew, skip the weather channel, go to newsnet5.com/weather they do cedar points offical forcast, and they have every kind of weather map you can think of. Also, their forecasts are usually more accurate than the weather channel

Matt again you do not realize donna hall was not complaining about the rides being down!! She was asking what caused it. She was apparently VERY happy to the fact she got the number of rides in that she did on the other coasters! Hell, I'd be REALLY happy to get in 5 MF rides in one day!!

Thank you Crazycoasterguy for trying to point this out to misinformed Mathew ,who obviousely cannot understand what my post was about ! I didnt think I had to explain the reason I made a trip to the park KNOWING that the weather was going to bad .I was very surprised and happy that those coasters were running and was only curious as to why the others could not . Is that so hard to understand ? It really Irritates me when these so called professionals try and make someone look stupid by asking " Ever think about watching the weather channel before you come ".No where in my post was there a complaint ,only a ? And thats the most ive ever been able to ride MF and Mantis in one day I was extremely happy !
Take it easy on the bold chief.

Um raptor does have a problem going up the hill and roll backs, but one major reason why raptor is so touchy with the winds is in fact due to the fact that it will roll back down the hill back into the station, yes you will say it can't because it has anti-roll backs on the hill, yes, it does, but they aren't strong enough to hold the train on there with high winds, the worse thing is and one reason i am guessing why B&M hasn't built a coaster since Mantis is because they said tough we aren't gonna fix the problem. so yes it has a problem with rollback, on the lift none the less!

http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/trips/tips.cfm

tells you which rides shut down in which weather. Also with Demon Drop, dont they have tires as part of their braking system. I think they have to be sure that everything is ok with respect to that (Dont ask me why the tires affect it, just think they might.
