I was wondering what the town of Sandusky allows for height limits on a ride before it needs approval. My homepark (SFGAm) allows heights up to 135 ft. After that it needs a vote by the board of Gurnee to approve a ride. Is Sandusky a strict town or is it pretty easy to approve such tall rides? Obviously MF needed approval.
Actually, Sandusky and Cedar Point have a pretty good working relationship. Although I do not know specifics, I would say that anything CP can get approval for through state and federal regs would probably be OK with the city. Since CP is on a peninsula, and isolated from the town, that probably helps. They built a 310 foot coaster, and nobody complained.

Thats not 100% accurate. I remember just after the ride was announced some locals with the usual complaints. "To much traffic" among other things. Simmilar to the current SFO traffic complaints.
I saw this on the local Cleveland news, but only once...unlike the SFO story which seem to air every other day or so now.

All of the locals complain about the traffic and tourists in general every so often. But it's nothing compared to SFO. In Sandusky, you just learn to avoid certain areas for a couple hours in the morning - and not every day. The evening "rush" isn't nearly as bad in town as the morning.
People who complain, complain about tourists in general. It's not like everyone is fearful that a new ride will be the cause of gridlock on Rt. 250. The traffic has not gotten any worse over the past several years.

True, the locals do complain about the traffic and the tourists. But the officials have a little different view, especially since the entertainment tax revenues from CP gate admissions are so lucrative. I guess when I said "nobody complained", I should have made it clear that I meant from a regulatory standpoint.

Why would Sandusky care about building a huge ride? A new bigger ride means more tourists which also means more $ for the economy in Sandusky. Cedar Point is accually helping out Sandusky when you think about it. Where do you think Sandusky would be without Cedar Point?

Sandusky would be a fantastic harbour town situated on a beautiful bay. Tourists would still flock.

Minor correction Chitown...the height restriction for SFGAm is 125', not 135'. And NEVER will they be allowed to build higher than Sky Trek tower at 330+ feet. I think CP has it great out on that peninsula where they're away from everything.
Side question: How tall is the *very top* of the Space Spiral?
Sandusky would just be some fishing town without Cedar Point. When you go through Sandusky to get to the park all the hotels say "2 miles from Cedar Point".That place would be a ghost town without Cedar Point.

Not true. The Sandusky area receives around 7 million visitors each year. Cedar Point's attendance is ~ 3.5 million. Sandusky would be different without Cedar Point, but it certainly would not be a ghost town. Go to http://www.buckeyenorth.com and order the free visitor's guide. Sandusky also ranked in the top 10 in two separate "Best Small Towns in America" surveys
I seem to remember a similar discussion on this board some time ago.

The very top of the Space Spiral is 330 feet from the ground.

Mantis How Much Can You Stand?
They have a neat Carousel Museum, a old style Drive in, a zoo, and great Lake Erie. It is also worth mentioning that both a GM and a Ford plant take up residents here. Keep in mind that it was all started by Cedar trees and a beach.
I remember that Cedar Points hieght restriction was 300ft before MF and Power Tower, and then they got it raised, I'm not sure to what though..
Hurricane_6, Where did you hear that from? Space Spiral is way over 300 ft.
I hate to bring up old stuff, but I live about 20min west of Sandusky along the lake and it would definitely NOT be a "ghost town" if Cedar Point wasn't there. It's a great little town on the lake and they got the best food up there in these tiny resturants that only the locals know about. I remember back in the day they have a festival of some sorts with a parade N all...when Cedar Point had a dolphin show and Jungle Larry's...

Space Spiral (330ft) doesn't count, lol. I really don't remember where I heard/saw the 300ft thing at, but I remember reading that they needed to raise there height limitations to build future rides. this was a few years ago, and i could always be wrong.. sorry.. maybe they have a limitation they can build up to without permission, with anything taller being approved
