^^ and there will be just over a week between the last Not-So-Scary Halloween and the first Very Merry Christmas Party this year. November 1st and 9th respectively.
Stores that carry crafting supplies to make Christmas stuff I expect it to be in stock early. People need time to be able to put it together before Christmas but regular just stuff in Walmart I will walk past like it doesn't exist until after Thanksgiving dinner has been consumed. I want nothing to do with Christmas until after my turkey dinner coma. Same thing with whoever had the bright idea to start back to school stocking 2 weeks after my last day of school. That just defines an entire area of the store I refuse to walk through until the appropriate time. Since both of my kids are too old for generic class supply lists that time won't be until after orientation late August. I may shop for clothes before then but I will otherwise do everything I can to remain blissfully unaware of the doom that awaits us last week of August.

See, I want nothing to do with stores after Thanksgiving, so any holiday decor that's needed I prefer to acquire sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving.
Brandon
Brandon is spot on with that.
Thank you internet for making holiday shopping tolerable.

Hell, Disney World is even starting their Mickey's Halloween Parties event in the middle of August this year.
I wouldn't call two days in the last week of the month "the middle of August" but yes they are starting earlier this year and it makes sense to do so. The event is very popular and now they can offer Halloween parties to those families who can't come down in the Fall because of school.

I always tell people this is the best time to visit the parks if you want to do both events. The crowds are typically smaller and you get both holidays within one vacation. Plus its just neat to see the park decorated for Halloween one day and Christmas the next day:)
Disney initially said the Christmas Party would start on the 8th this year, before switching it to the 9th. I was just a little surprised at the number of "already booked my airfare" folks upset because they had planned exactly that with no cushion for unexpected circumstances on the 8th.
The approach certainly makes sense, but after last year I'm not so convinced the tail end of that week will have smaller crowds. Starting the parade and TV specials filming that early seemed to pack them in last year.
Knotts starts setting up the Haunt sets and mazes right after the 4th of July. I was up there this past weekend, they are fully into set up mode.
^Knotts along with many other parks begin actual construction mid summer just because of how long it takes to accomplish everything needed for a maze to be done in time for opening night. Cedar Point will usually begin construction around August depending on the complexity of the house or the amount of new houses.

This is one of the reasons the filming was moved from December to November last year and it certainly helped with production. But as you said, the crowds followed and still showed up. The first couple event nights still remain to be slower than those further on into the season.
