Grammar/Spelling Police

Okay so, I'm not an English teacher, and like everyone else, I do make mistakes sometimes when it comes to correct grammar and spelling. However, it seems like it is getting harder and harder to read posts on this site. I'm not trying to be on a soapbox here, but would it kill everyone to use the correct form of words such as "there", "their", and "they're?" What about "your" and "you're?" "Its" and "It's?" There are lots of people who don't capitalize everything that should be capitalized (I'm sure I've broken this rule too, but I'm trying to fix that) as well.

I'm sure everyone knows these rules and how they work, but I'll go through them anyway:

There - used to describe a place - "I want to go there."

Their - used to show possession or ownership - "Their roller coasters make me happy."

They're - form of "They are" - "They're going to Cedar Point today."

Your - used to show ownership - "Mr. Kinzel, I like your park's roller coasters."

You're - form of "You are" - "You're the boss, Mr. Kinzel."

Its - used to show ownership - "I like Raptor. Its inversions are intense!"

It's - form of "It is" - "It's the best ride here!"

Also, just because words sound alike does not mean that they are spelled the same way. A good example of this is "hear" and here."

We all make mistakes from time to time, but it doesn't take more than an extra minute to read over your post and check your grammar and spelling. I'm going to read over this post before I submit it, just like I read over every post. Spell check programs are great, but they aren't going to catch any of the things I pointed out above, so if we could just check over everything, the site would be much easier to read and understand.

I have also had many times when I have read a post that I made and found a mistake in it. This is a perfect time to use the edit feature of this forum. If you find that you've made a mistake, simply make the corrections necessary. This also takes very little time.

I think that the community on this site is wonderful. However, I think that we look much more respectable as a website community if people would use somewhat correct spellings and grammar when they post.

Please note that I am in no way trying to start a war on this site. I just feel that the site would be much easier to read if sentences were complete, had punctuation, and the words that are in those sentences were spelled correctly. The community as a whole would be much better with correct grammar and spelling.

Y'know, there's been something I've been meaning to ask you, MrScott. Have you ever forgotten to include your name in your posts?

Brandon

If i said something like, Let's use there car. You would not understand that i mean. yeah i spelled their incorrectly but could you REALLY not understand what I meant???? I think sometimes we DO get up on the proverbial BANDBOX and I think it is crazy.. This is not English class, everyone here does not have high IQ's.. give some people breaks.. It is NOT a perfect world....if you want to bi$#% go to Lowe's where they have changed every sign inside to have spanish on it in OUR english speaking country

and that is REALLY how how I feel about it

I think what he's saying is that it is understandable, but difficult to read. When there are very few errors in a post, its a fast & easy read. When there are several grammatical oopsies, often times a post requires another (at least partial) read-thru.

I don't think its really asking a whole lot just to quickly proofread a post before submitting it. I think most people here even read their post again after submitting it just to be thorough. I know I do, and a lot of times I find errors, which are quick and easy to correct. The whole process takes an extra minute, at the most, and makes the entire forum a much more relaxing read.

I agree 100%.

"Your/You're" is a REAL peeve of mine and I understand that it's my own problem, but a lot of people are older than I am and have more education than I do and they are just too lazy to bother to stop and think about it. It's a very easy thing to do people!

and a hefty LOL at the 2nd above post. So many errors, so little time..

For me personally, it's actually HARDER to be "lazy" in type, like posting "u" instead of "you" or something of that nature. *** Edited 3/24/2006 11:24:02 PM UTC by Grovite18***

There are more posts and threads about peoples grammar than there are about the "New Ride". Really it is sad when you see a kid trying to add to the discussion and because he doesn't fit the IQ, age or grade requirement he is shunned away by a few members of Point Buzz who think they are the most perfect people in the world. Seems some have an ego that they must protect on an Internet forum.

This is not directed to the maker of the thread at all. Mainly to those who in other threads have been in the simplest of terms ass holes. (They know who they are).

101 on Magnum and counting...

"There's a difference between a typo (which we all make) and chat shorthand ("r ne of u lamerz?") People like to read real, spelled out words, with capitalization and punctuation. You don't have to add pointless emphasis!!!!!!!???????!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT, we can hear you just fine. Please utilize your shift and caps lock key properly. Respect for the English language is important, and that means chat shorthand is not welcome."

I think we all need to step back and take a look at the forum rules. Their, there, and they're doesn't really bother me. But u annoys the hell out of me. This is a forum, where you're not hurrying and typing as fast as you can. Take a step back and read your post for 5 seconds. How much more time does it really take you to type u than you? All u is is a sign of laziness, which unfortunately I'm seeing a lot of in America these days.

No there isn't.

Part of what makes this a great message board community is the fact that it doesn't look like an AOL IM chat window.

This is not English class and we are not looking for perfect grammar. If you mess up on they're/there, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. But capitalize words, use punctuation, avoid chat shorthand, and run your post through a spell checker. Not too much to ask at all.
