You could always get a pass from Valleyfair (or use your CP one at VF). I went last August, its actually a really nice park with a very good collection of rides.
This would give you a good reason for splurging on the season pass. Looking at Google maps, its only about 1:40 from Rochester to Shakopee (depending on where you actually live and how you drive). VF could be worth one or two days a year, and combine that with a 2-3 day trip to CP and passes become a little bit more reasonable.

For two days, I would suggest just avoiding Friday and Saturday. I would probably pick Wednesday-Thursday if I could choose.
For early entry, your cheapest choice is Breakers Express. But I highly recommend Hotel Breakers for the convenience of being within short walking distance to the park. I'll tell you what I tell everybody. Compare the total cost of your trip staying at Hotel Breakers with the total cost staying somewhere else, and ask yourself how significant the difference in price really is.
Whatever you do, don't sell yourself short. Early ride time is truly priceless. Stay at a Cedar Point resort!

I'm staying at LHP (Lighthouse Point) August 29 and 30!!! I can't wait because I am anticipating short lines. It's been 2 years since I stayed at a Cedar Point resort, I'm looking forward to it. Thank God I don't go back to school until September 6th! Good ol' Canada.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

If you *must* go in august, go the last 2 week days, since a lot of kids will be in school by then.
Going to Cedar Point on the last days of august isn't such a good idea because it will be really packed because everyone will want to get that last CP trip in before school starts.
Or just go when you think you should
